【Pharmaceutical Network Industry Dynamics】With the intensification of population aging and the continuous improvement in consumption levels, the scale of China's pharmaceutical market keeps expanding, attracting numerous multinational pharmaceutical companies to increase their investments. Recent reports indicate that six multinational pharmaceutical enterprises—Eli Lilly, Pfizer, Bayer, AstraZeneca, Medtronic, and HUYA Bioscience International—will establish new research and development or innovation facilities in Beijing. All these facilities will be located in Beijing’s BioPark within the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (also known as Yizhuang, Beijing).

Among the announcements, Eli Lilly and Company declared on October 15 the establishment of the China Medical Innovation Center in Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area to promote clinical research and expedite the drug development process. The center focuses on enhancing the efficiency of clinical trials and supporting drug registration and evaluation with the aim of accelerating patient access to innovative medicines. It will concentrate on diseases such as Alzheimer's, diabetes, and obesity, advancing the development of breakthrough treatments. Additionally, Eli Lilly plans to set up an innovation incubator in Beijing to nurture early-stage high-potential projects and accelerate the research and market launch of innovative drugs.

Pfizer Plans to Establish New R&D Center in Beijing, as Its First Physical Entity in the City, Dedicated to Conducting International Multicenter Clinical Trials, Promoting Global Synchronization of Clinical Trials; Focusing on New Product R&D in Oncology and Other Fields, Building World-Class Research-Oriented Wards; Deepening Collaboration with Beijing Medical Institutions to Cultivate Clinical R&D Talents of International Standards.

Bayer's newly established Bayer Open Innovation Center will continue to introduce innovative drugs in therapeutic areas such as cardiovascular diseases and oncology. It will build two major platforms: a globally advanced concept validation platform and a clinical trial information data operation platform, to facilitate the incubation and transformation of local innovation projects.

AstraZeneca has previously established its commercial operations, innovation, and industry incubation sectors in Beijing. This time, it is further setting up the AstraZeneca Global R&D Beijing Center, which will cover early-stage R&D for product pipelines in areas such as oncology and cardiovascular diseases, as well as clinical development of orphan drugs. In addition, AstraZeneca will actively evaluate early-stage projects with original technologies in Beijing, participating through investment and other means to promote the transformation and implementation of these projects.

Medtronic has established its first digital service innovation base in China at the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Zone (Yizhuang), focusing on the development of cardiovascular disease solutions based on artificial intelligence and big data, as well as building a medical training center in specialized fields.

HUYA Bioscience International has established its China headquarters in Yizhuang, Beijing, which will become the first international platform in Beijing dedicated to the global expansion of innovative drugs. Leveraging HUYA's extensive experience in international product registration and commercialization, it will assist local companies in reaching international markets.

It is reported that Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (BDA) is becoming a hotspot for the agglomeration of pharmaceutical and health enterprises due to its complete industrial chain and favorable business environment. Currently, it has attracted nearly 5,000 pharmaceutical and health enterprises, covering the entire industrial chain including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and services. It is one of the most concentrated areas for the development of the pharmaceutical and health industry in Beijing. In 2022, the output value of the biomedical and health industry in BDA was approximately 90 billion yuan, laying a solid foundation for the industry's development.

Next, the Economic Development Zone (EDZ) will continue to build an open and inclusive industrial ecosystem, create a first-class business environment that is market-oriented, law-based, and internationalized, and further promote the construction of BioPark with greater efforts. It will improve industrial supporting facilities and create favorable conditions for multinational pharmaceutical companies such as Eli Lilly and Company to establish and develop in the region.
