Yesterday,Abbott announces FDA approval for users to wear FreeStyle Libre 2 and 3 CGM during the following common imaging examinations.
FDA Approves Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) for Use During X-rays, CT Scans, and MRIs. Abbott stated that its system is the first and only CGM sensor approved for patient use during these screenings.
FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus Worn During Imaging
Users do not need to remove and discard the sensors used for these imaging procedures before the end of the device wearing time. This can increase their confidence in the equipment and potentially save money.
Dr. Carol Wysham is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine and the head of the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Rockwood Clinic in Spokane. Wysham said that in the past, patients had to remove their sensors during testing, resulting in hours of lost critical data.
Wysym stated, "The removal of the imaging contraindication in the Abbott FreeStyle Libre 2 and 3 systems is a significant win for patients, allowing them to keep the sensor on and avoid data loss."
Abbott said that imaging procedures are usually part of diabetes care, especially since diabetes can cause many medical complications. The company conducted rigorous testing on its Libre 2 and 3 sensors to ensure they remain effective after radiological procedures. This FDA approval also did not involve any changes to the sensors.
Dr. Anila Bindal, Deputy Medical Director of Abbott's Diabetes Care business, stated: "Continuous glucose monitoring is crucial for diabetes management. We have witnessed firsthand how the ongoing use of Libre technology benefits people with diabetes. The removal of this contraindication aligns with Abbott's commitment to providing simple, convenient, and affordable diabetes management technology."
