【Pharmaceutical Network Industry Dynamics】In recent years, the neurology drug market has developed rapidly. Statistics show that seven varieties had global sales exceeding 2 billion US dollars each in 2023. Among them, Roche's multiple sclerosis drug Ocrelizumab achieved global sales of over 7 billion US dollars in 2023.

Data shows that Roche's Ocrevus achieved global sales of $7.103 billion in 2023. In the first half of this year, Ocrevus sales continued to grow, reaching $3.359 billion, a year-on-year increase of 5%.

According to the data, Ocrelizumab (Ocrevus) is a humanized monoclonal antibody targeting the CD20 molecule on the surface of B cells. Its intravenous injection was approved by the FDA in March 2017 for the treatment of relapsing multiple sclerosis (RMS), including relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS), active or relapsing secondary progressive MS (SPMS), clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), and primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS).

It is reported that multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated chronic, disabling inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, often affecting areas around the ventricles, near the cortex, optic nerves, spinal cord, brainstem, and cerebellum. Statistics show that there are approximately 3.5 million MS patients globally, with the majority experiencing initial symptoms between the ages of 20 and 40. The disease predominantly affects young and middle-aged women in this age group, creating a substantial demand for medication.

AbbVie's Botulinum Toxin (Botox Therapeutic) achieved global sales of $5.673 billion in 2023. Data shows that Botox was first approved in 1989 for treating facial spasms and strabismus, received approval in 2000 for cervical dystonia, and later expanded into the cosmetic field, including wrinkle reduction, facial slimming, and the elimination of glabellar lines and crow’s feet. In recent years, Botox has also been approved for treating upper limb spasticity, chronic migraines, neurogenic urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, spasticity, and severe underarm sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis), among other indications. Botox is an approved type A botulinum toxin treatment product. In the United States, Botox has been approved by the FDA for 12 therapeutic indications. It is noted that Botox is the approved neurotoxin for pediatric patients with neurogenic detrusor overactivity. Botox works by blocking nerve impulses to muscles (in this indication, the bladder muscle), selectively preventing the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, temporarily reducing muscle contractions.

Johnson & Johnson's Paliperidone (Invega Sustenna) achieved global sales of $4.115 billion in 2023. The drug is indicated for schizophrenia. Data shows that schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder caused by the interaction of genetic, biological, and environmental factors, often presenting with impairments in perception, thinking, emotion, and behavior. Due to its long course, severe condition, and susceptibility to relapse, schizophrenia imposes a significant disease burden on patients, their families, and society.

Takeda's Lisdexamfetamine Achieved Global Sales of $3.012 Billion in 2023. According to data, Lisdexamfetamine (brand name Vyvanse) is Takeda Pharmaceutical’s key drug used for treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and children over 6 years old. It is also approved for the treatment of binge eating disorder in adults. Vyvanse is marketed in regions such as the United States, Europe, and Japan.

In addition, AbbVie's drug Cariprazine, which is used for schizophrenia and depression, achieved global sales of $2.759 billion in 2023. Novartis' multiple sclerosis drug Ocrelizumab reached sales of $2.171 billion, and Otsuka Pharmaceutical's schizophrenia and depression drug Brexpiprazole achieved sales of $2.169 billion.
