As the world's first colonoscope to receive FDA approval, the birth of GI Genius is revolutionary. Its main function is to assist doctors in detecting polyps that may be present during colonoscopy, including polyps as small as a few millimeters, through deep learning algorithms and image analysis. This can effectively reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.
The clinical data at that time showed,GI Genius detects 82% faster than doctors, with an error rate of less than 1%. Its adenoma detection rate is 14% higher than that of conventional colonoscopy, and the likelihood of detecting polyps is increased by 30%.Moreover, this module is compatible with all FDA-approved endoscopic video systems, such as Olympus, Fujifilm, and Pentax.

GI Genius Module as an Artificial Intelligence Software Application for Detecting Precancerous Polyps, the SystemIntegrated with the AI Access platform, it is expected to host multiple artificial intelligence software applications. This is an open and scalable platform jointly developed by Medtronic and IMD at an early stage, aimed at hosting, managing, and supporting multiple AI diagnostic tools from third-party developers.
In other words,Third-party developers can obtain login access through the AI Access platform, enter the Innovation Center, utilize its tools and resources, and create customized healthcare applications according to their own needs and goals. Moreover, once third-party developers successfully create new artificial intelligence applications and receive approval from market regulators, these programs can be integrated into the GI Genius module via the AI Access platform.

Data shows that in 2021, Medtronic's GI Genius intelligent endoscopy module received FDA approval in the United States, becoming the first and only AI system for colonoscopy.
In 2024, Medtronic and the Cosmo team launched the latest version of the colonoscopy AI system — the GI Genius™ platform.Improved polyp detection features, including new functions such as automatic program highlighting, and opened the GI Genius operating system to third-party software developers. This GI Genius™ platform, integrated with the latest NVIDIA IGX™ platform, has entered the final stage of regulatory approval and is expected to be launched in the third quarter of this year.

GI Genius™ was conceived, designed, developed, and manufactured by Cosmo IMD and is distributed globally by Medtronic.
According to the expanded agreement terms, Medtronic plans to pay Cosom an advance of 100 million US dollars. The agreement also includes a double-digit net sales royalty that is in line with market standards.Medtronic is required to pay an additional $100 million in potential milestone fees, which are expected to be achieved by the end of 2024. Cosmo remains the exclusive manufacturer, granting Medtronic exclusive global commercial rights.
It is reported that Cosmo is a pharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of treatments for specific gastrointestinal diseases, improving quality indicators for endoscopic procedures through the auxiliary detection of colon lesions, as well as treating specific dermatological conditions. The products developed and manufactured by Cosmo are globally distributed by selected partners, including Lialda®/Mezavant®/Mesavancol®, Uceris®/Cortiment®, Aemcolo®/Relafalk®, Lumeblue®, and Winlevi®.
As the gold standard for colon cancer screening, endoscopy has high sensitivity and accuracy. However, missed diagnoses often occur due to factors such as the structure of the colon and variations in lesions.
The length of the colon in normal adults is about 1.5 meters, and there are significant individual differences in its morphology within the abdominal cavity. The bends and folds inside the colon can lead to blind spots in the field of view. Not only that, but many colonic lesions appear deceptive in images, resembling normal mucosa very closely, which poses a great challenge to the skill level of the examining physician.

Colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in the United States.Data from 2020 shows that there were 555,000 new cases of colorectal cancer in China, making it the second most common cancer, accounting for approximately half of the global new cases of colorectal cancer.
As a result, colon cancer/gastrointestinal endoscopy-assisted diagnosis has become a battleground crowded with medical AI. In the current field of medical artificial intelligence imaging, AI-assisted diagnosis for gastrointestinal endoscopy is alsoThe first artificial intelligence diagnostic project to be included in clinical guidelines in China.
As early as 2017, Japan's National Cancer Center and NEC Corporation announced the development of an artificial intelligence system for the automatic diagnosis of polyps in colonoscopy., trained on 140,000 colonoscopy images and tested on 5,000 colonoscopy images, achieving an accuracy rate as high as 98%.
Notably, several AI-assisted endoscopy innovative products from companies such as Tencent Healthcare, Chengdu Visionsense Medical, Wuhan Chuling Technology, Suzhou Huiwei Intelligence, and Zhejiang Huirui Medical have been approved in China.

Currently, a large number of studies and practices clearly indicate that conducting colorectal cancer screening and implementing early diagnosis and treatment can significantly reduce the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer.Early screening for colorectal cancer not only has a strong market demand but also targets a large population, giving rise to a substantial market volume.
Medtronic is precisely targeting this huge market,Including this timeNearly 100 sets of AI endoscopy equipment installed,Medtronic and VA Collaboration Covers Over 360 GI Genius Devices。AndIn recent years, the growing customer installation base of GI Genius indicates a promising market capacity in the future. In response, Device China will continue to follow and report on the development.
