Peking University Team Publishes in Cell, Cracking the Biosynthesis Puzzle of Harringtonine Anticancer Drugs

Cell, June 12. The team led by Lei Xiaoguang from Peking University, in collaboration with the team led by Yan Jianbin from the Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, has for the first time fully elucidated the de novo biosynthetic pathways of two key anticancer alkaloids (cephalotaxine and homoharringtonine) in Cephalotaxus fortunei, and successfully achieved their heterologous reconstruction in tobacco. (See this issue’s Industry Monthly Report for details.)

Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences: Bacteria “Train” NK Cells to Establish Long-Term Memory Against Cancer Metastasis

Molecular Therapy, June 3. The Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the University of Hong Kong, has for the first time revealed that therapeutic attenuated Salmonella can “train” natural killer (NK) cells to establish “trained immunity,” providing sustained anti-metastatic protection for 3 to 4 months even after the bacteria are completely cleared. This discovery extends the concept of “trained immunity” from infectious immunity to the field of tumor metastasis prevention and treatment. (See this issue’s Industry Monthly Report for details.)
