Recently, biotechnology company Vera announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted accelerated approval to Trutakna (atacicept-vymj), a subcutaneous injection administered by patients at home using an autoinjector. For reducing proteinuria levels in adult patients with primary IgA nephropathy at risk of disease progression.
IgA nephropathy is a serious kidney disease that occurs when abnormal forms of IgA antibodies accumulate in the kidneys, leading to inflammation and damage. This kidney damage can cause proteins to leak from the blood into the urine (proteinuria) and result in gradual loss of kidney function over time, potentially progressing to kidney failure.
Currently, there are approximately 5 million patients with IgA nephropathy in China, and more than 100,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.In its press release, the company noted that Trutakna is currently the only therapy capable of simultaneously targeting both B-cell activating factor (BAFF) and A proliferation-inducing ligand (APRIL), thereby addressing the immune-driven mechanisms underlying IgA nephropathy.
