According to a post by Whole Mars Catalog on the X platform, Neuralink’s ongoing human clinical trials have now enrolled their 26th participant. This figure represents a significant increase from the globally confirmed total of 21 participants in January 2026, indicating that the company has substantially accelerated its participant recruitment efforts as it enters the second half of the year.
Neuralink launched its human implant trials in early 2024, with Noland Arbaugh becoming the first recipient of the company’s “Telepathy” device. Arbaugh, a patient with quadriplegia, demonstrated the ability to control a computer cursor, browse web pages, and post on social media using only his thoughts. Subsequently, the company expanded its clinical trials to international markets, initiating studies in the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and Canada. As of May 2026, seven participants had been enrolled in the UK’s GB PRIME study.

These trials encompass two major studies: the PRIME study, targeting individuals with quadriplegia due to spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) who wish to control computers and robotic arms via thought; and the VOICE trial, focused on decoding intended words from the thoughts of individuals with severe speech impairments. The Link implant itself is approximately the size of a quarter (23 mm in diameter), with each device equipped with up to 3,072 electrodes. Neuralink’s speech restoration technology and its “Blindsight” vision restoration project have both received the “Breakthrough Device Designation” from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
By the end of 2025, Elon Musk announced plans to initiate mass production of brain-computer interface devices, aiming to achieve a nearly fully automated surgical process by 2026. With 26 implants completed over approximately two and a half years of human trials, this progress—while not rapid for a technology in its early developmental stages—has been steady. Furthermore, expansion into international markets indicates that the bottleneck is shifting from regulatory approval to surgical capacity and participant recruitment. The pace of this transition will largely depend on whether the timeline for implementing automated surgical procedures can be met as scheduled.
