On the morning of October 13, the 2023 Chinese Biomaterials Conference, hosted by the Chinese Society for Biomaterials and organized by Chongqing University, opened at the Chongqing Yuelai International Convention Center.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Zhang Shengmin, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society for Biomaterials.

In his opening address to the conference, Liu Changsheng stated that the Chinese Society for Biomaterials has always been committed to uniting and organizing a broad community of biomaterials scientists and technologists, thereby accumulating strength to advance the science, education, clinical application, and industrial development of biomaterials in China. Over the years, the Chinese Conference on Biomaterials has gathered elites from various sectors, focusing on frontiers in biomaterials science, technological innovation, translation of achievements, and regulatory science. It has provided experts and practitioners in the field with opportunities to exchange academic ideas, discuss the latest research findings, and share industry experience. This year’s conference will bring together more than 3,000 scientists and technologists for intellectual exchange and collision, fostering the integration of technological innovations and jointly creating a scientific feast dedicated to the full-chain development of biomaterials and medical devices.

Du Huiping extended warm congratulations on the convening of the 2023 Chinese Society for Biomaterials Conference, offered a sincere welcome to domestic and international attendees, and expressed heartfelt gratitude to friends from all sectors who have long cared about and supported Chongqing’s development. In recent years, Chongqing Municipality has attached great importance to the innovative development of the biopharmaceutical industry, leveraged the advantages of the national biopharmaceutical industrial cluster, removed institutional barriers to the translation of scientific and technological achievements, developed high-value-added medical devices, and strived to build Chongqing into a highland for the development of health science and technology in western China. He stated that the conference closely adhered to the theme of “Innovative Biomaterials for Safeguarding Public Health,” facilitating discussions on new trends, emerging fields, and novel pathways in biomaterials science and technology. Leveraging this conference, Chongqing will further deepen openness and cooperation in medical device science and technology, establish a hub for the health science and technology industry and a pilot zone for institutional innovation aimed at high-quality development, and stimulate vitality in biomaterials-related scientific and technological innovation. He sincerely welcomed research institutions, enterprises, and investment firms from home and abroad to engage in innovation, entrepreneurship, and investment in Chongqing, achieving win-win development through deepened cooperation.

In his address, Zhang Hua stated that in recent years, the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) has continuously deepened reforms of the medical device review and approval system, improved the quality and efficiency of reviews and approvals, and promoted the healthy and innovative development of the medical device industry. A series of innovative reform measures have been introduced, including the issuance of the Special Review Procedures for Innovative Medical Devices and the Priority Review Procedures for Medical Devices, the launch of the Regulatory Science Action Plan, and the leveraging of the Biomaterials Innovation Cooperation Platform to effectively carry out the “open competition” mechanism for key biomaterials innovation tasks, thereby driving the high-quality development of the biomaterials industry. This conference has established a robust platform for exchange among experts and practitioners in the field of biomaterials, and it is believed that the event will play a positive role in boosting the development of the biopharmaceutical industry.

On behalf of Chongqing University, Li Jian extended a warm welcome to the distinguished experts, scholars, and industry colleagues in attendance. He stated that Chongqing University was honored to host the 2023 Chinese Biomaterials Conference. The conference has established a premier academic exchange platform for experts and scholars across relevant fields. As a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and a Class A institution in China’s “Double First-Class” Initiative for building world-class universities, Chongqing University boasts a long history of education and profound cultural heritage. The university attaches great importance to the development of the biomaterials discipline. It is confident that, with the rapid advancement and enhanced overall strength of its science, engineering, and medical disciplines, the biomaterials field will seize greater opportunities and achieve more robust development through high-quality integration of medicine and engineering.

The opening ceremony also featured the Fellowship Induction Ceremony of the Chinese Society for Biomaterials (CSB). The 2023 cohort marked the inaugural selection of CSB Fellows, with a total of 46 fellows elected, including Academician Zhang Xingdong. Academician Zhang Xingdong, Academician Wang Yingjun, Academician Fu Xiaobing, Academician Liu Changsheng, Academician Zhao Yuliang, Academician Chen Xuesi, and Academician Gu Ning were invited to present the fellowship certificates to the newly inducted fellows.

The 2023 Chinese Society for Biomaterials Science and Technology Awards were also presented at the conference. This year, two First Prizes and one Second Prize were awarded. Academician Zhao Yuliang, Academician Gu Ning, and Professor Li Jian were invited to present the awards to the recipients. The certificate and award presentation ceremony was hosted by Professor Gao Changyou, Vice President of the Chinese Society for Biomaterials.

Furthermore, Professor Ki Dong Park, President of the 2024 World Biomaterials Congress, delivered the keynote address at the opening ceremony. This session was moderated by Professor Wang Yunbing, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society for Biomaterials.
It is understood that the 2023 Chinese Biomaterials Congress spanned four days, featuring an opening ceremony and a closing ceremony. The scientific program included five plenary lectures, 135 specialized symposia, eight congress forums, and poster sessions. Additionally, the event hosted corporate satellite meetings and recruitment presentations, thereby providing a platform, creating opportunities, and fostering collaboration for scientists, regulatory professionals, and entrepreneurs engaged in biomaterials and medical device research in China.
