Gusu Annual Conference on Biomedical Testing Technology Held in Suzhou to Promote Deep Integration of Medicine and Engineering

On November 4, the Gusu Annual Conference on Biomedical Laboratory Technology Development was held in Suzhou New District. Co-hosted by the Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences; the Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University; and the Jiangsu Society for Immunology, the conference was themed “Integration of Medicine and Engineering, Collaborative Innovation.” It brought together more than 100 renowned scholars, clinical application experts, and industry specialists from China and abroad to engage in in-depth discussions on the integration of medicine and engineering.

Yang Liang, Deputy Secretary of the Party Working Committee and Director of the Administrative Committee of Suzhou Science and Technology Town, stated that Suzhou is striving to build a landmark biomedical industry hub as the only region in Jiangsu Province’s “One Zone, One Strategic Industry” layout with key support for the medical device industry. Adhering to innovation-driven development, the Suzhou New District is committed to establishing a benchmark demonstration cluster for high-end medical devices. It has gathered 1,137 enterprises in related fields, with an industrial scale exceeding RMB 43 billion and an average annual output growth rate of over 30%. Moving forward, the district will focus on niche sectors such as in vitro diagnostics (IVD), organ-on-a-chip, and digital healthcare, aiming to have more than 1,500 enterprises and an output value exceeding RMB 100 billion in these areas by 2025.

“Integrating biomedical engineering with other disciplines can help identify and address clinical issues, while accelerating the translation of new technologies,” said Zhou Lianqun, Deputy Director of the Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Executive Deputy Director of the Key Laboratory of Biomedical Testing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is hoped that this conference will facilitate the exchange of new technologies in clinical laboratory medicine, promote medical-engineering collaboration in biomedical testing technology, and foster high-quality development of emerging technologies.

Under the leadership of the Suzhou Municipal Science and Technology Bureau, the Suzhou High-End Medical Device Industry Innovation Consortium has established an institutional framework centered on talent, technology, capital, and mechanisms. In response to the medical device industry’s characteristics—such as interdisciplinary nature, numerous specialized segments, and the prevalence of small yet highly specialized enterprises—the Consortium vigorously promotes precise alignment and integrated development among industry, academia, research institutions, and healthcare providers, thereby effectively driving the high-quality development of Suzhou’s high-end medical device industry.


A Youth Academic Forum was held during the conference, receiving 54 submissions from hospitals, universities, and research institutes. Following expert review and selection, 25 outstanding papers were chosen, and 18 scholars were invited to participate in the offline finals, showcasing new technologies and advances in fields such as clinical laboratory medicine.

In addition, the conference featured industry-academia-research sub-forums on new technologies in microbiological testing, intelligent biomedical sensing, and medical mass spectrometry, to discuss the development of cutting-edge technologies and their industrial implementation, while jointly exploring the prospects for medical laboratory services and medical devices in Suzhou.


The Annual Conference on the Development of Biomedical Laboratory Technology in Gusu focuses on medical laboratory technology and promotes deep integration among healthcare, research, and industry, holding significant importance for Suzhou High-Tech Zone’s efforts to accelerate its development into a national hub for high-end medical device manufacturing.
