Yang Hui, Principal Investigator at the Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Founder and Chief Scientific Advisor of Hui-Gene Therapeutics; recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars; Shanghai Top Young Talent and Outstanding Academic Leader; awardee of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, the Vcanbio Life Medicine Innovation Breakthrough Award, and the WuXi AppTec Life Chemistry Research Award for Outstanding Achievement.
Mr. Yang Hui has long been dedicated to research in the field of gene editing, achieving a series of original results in the development of gene editing technologies, safety evaluation, and clinical translation of gene therapies for hereditary diseases. He pioneered GOTI, a more sensitive technique for detecting off-target effects in gene editing, and provided the first evidence that single-base editing tools exhibit significant DNA and RNA off-target effects. He has developed various compact RNA and DNA editing tools with foundational patents, which have been granted authorization in both China and the United States. Additionally, he pioneered a glycosylase-mediated DNA single-base editing system that operates independently of deaminases. His research findings have been published in top international journals, including Science, Nature, Cell, Nature Methods, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Cell Biology, and Cell Research. Notably, his work titled “Single-Base Gene Editing Causes Extensive Off-Target Effects and Its Optimized Solutions” was selected as one of the “Top Ten Advances in Life Sciences in China 2019.”
