According to the WHO, global obesity rates have nearly tripled since 1975. The 2023 edition of the World Obesity Atlas predicts that by 2035, more than 4 billion people worldwide will be classified as obese or overweight, accounting for 51% of the global population.

Driven by factors such as lifestyle habits, dietary patterns, and psychosocial influences, obesity has become a significant public health concern demanding urgent attention. Consequently, methods for fat reduction and body contouring have grown increasingly diverse, evolving from simple dietary restriction and exercise to more advanced interventions such as bariatric surgery, with new approaches emerging continuously.

However, stubborn fat deposits that cannot be eliminated through diet and exercise are always a source of frustration.

Are there any new therapies to address this challenge? The answer is yes.

In addition to dieting, exercise, and liposuction, a novel fat-reduction method is entering the market. How can non-contact, non-invasive, surgery-free, painless, and safe fat reduction be achieved? Dominion Aesthetic Technologies provides the answer.

Dominion Aesthetic Technologies, established in 2016 (hereinafter referred to as “Dominion”), is a company specializing in laser-based aesthetic devices. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, USA, with its R&D laboratory located in Florida, its core technology is non-contact robotic laser body contouring. This technology evolves from industry-leading laser and cooling technologies and is grounded in years of scientific research and clinical trials. Building on this foundation, Dominion has developed EON, a non-contact intelligent fat-reduction robot. EON has currently received FDA clearance for reducing fat in the thighs, abdomen, and back.

EON Therapy: A Revolution in Dieting, Exercise, and Liposuction

Traditional methods for fat reduction and body contouring primarily rely on dieting and exercise.

Aerobic exercise relies on prolonged, low-to-moderate intensity activity to burn fat. While it is safe and healthy, improving cardiopulmonary function, it requires a considerable amount of time to yield visible results, has limited efficacy for localized body contouring, and its actual effects vary from person to person. Dieting reduces fat by decreasing food intake. Although simple and easy to implement, it may lead to malnutrition, impair metabolism, and is prone to rebound weight gain. Excessive dieting can also trigger eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa.

In addition, another option is liposuction—a surgical procedure that directly removes excess fat. Although this treatment yields immediate results, it carries certain surgical risks, involves a prolonged recovery period, and may lead to complications such as skin irregularities, infection, and bleeding.

As an innovation over the aforementioned three fat-reduction methods, EON treatment can eliminate stubborn fat that cannot be removed through dieting and exercise, while sparing patients from surgical intervention.

Dr. Thomas Fiala previously led a 12-week study in which subjects underwent treatment on each flank using EON’s 110-cm treatment mode (the flanks refer to the fat distribution between the patient’s ribs and hip bones). The study included 11 participants aged 24 to 63 years, with body mass indices ranging from 22.3 to 34.2. Results showed an average fat reduction of 6.1 mm per side after a single segmented treatment session. The study also confirmed the safety of the non-contact 1064-nm laser device, EON, for subcutaneous fat reduction, achieving 100% patient satisfaction with no non-responders.

Non-contact laser energy delivery and skin cooling, with treatment completed in 60 minutes

EON’s treatment is simple and quick, non-invasive and painless, and can be completed within one hour.

First, EON’s intelligent robotic arm scans the patient, leveraging smart sensor technology to map their fat distribution pattern and customize a personalized treatment plan that provides non-contact laser energy delivery and skin cooling. The device’s treatment head is driven by an articulated robotic arm, enabling uniform delivery of laser energy. Utilizing a 1064 nm wavelength laser, the treatment head transfers thermal energy to adipocytes beneath the skin, heating the adipose tissue to 51°C to induce adipocyte apoptosis. After these subcutaneous fat cells die, the body naturally eliminates them over time via the lymphatic system, with optimal results visible after 12 weeks.

This procedure requires no anesthesia, incisions, catheters, saline solutions, or medications. Furthermore, the EON device features QUICKCOOL technology, which includes an air cooling system and temperature monitoring to ensure that the temperature on the patient’s skin surface does not exceed 39.5°C, thereby maintaining patient comfort and preventing skin burns. Empowered by this technology, the operator need only press a button for the EON device to halt laser energy delivery within 10 seconds, while the robotic arm directs a stream of cold air onto the patient’s skin surface. EON’s proprietary jet impingement cooling technology achieves the industry’s best temperature differential (Δ=11.5°C).

In a cooling efficacy validation study conducted by Dominion Aesthetic Technologies, experiments were performed on live porcine models using EON’s laser/cooling handpiece. Thermocouples were implanted at varying depths to measure and record the temperature of adipose tissue, while calibrated sensors were used to continuously measure and record skin temperature. The results demonstrated that during the process of laser-heating subcutaneous adipose tissue to 49°C, EON was able to maintain the skin surface temperature of living tissue at or below 40°C, thereby reducing the risk of collateral thermal damage to the skin surface and tissues beyond the subcutaneous fat layer. Furthermore, EON can be immediately repositioned to adjacent areas for treatment, enabling a larger treatment coverage compared to other fixed-contact systems and providing continuous, flexible therapy.

EON utilizes intelligent robotics to perform the treatment process, eliminating the need for operators to engage in time-consuming, labor-intensive, and complex surgical procedures. Instead, it offers an efficient and rapid treatment approach with consistent outcomes. As the system is robotically controlled, EON delivers uniform laser energy across the entire treatment area, ensuring even therapeutic effects. Its intuitive operational design, combined with smart sensor technology, enables real-time monitoring of skin proximity and temperature, while dynamically adjusting power output to achieve optimal treatment efficacy.

Notably, non-contact treatment also eliminates the need for gels or applicators, requires no post-procedure care, and involves no medication during treatment and recovery, thereby minimizing patient downtime and side effects. As there is no physical contact, this therapy reduces the risk of infection associated with contact. Furthermore, unlike other devices that require disposable treatment instruments, EON does not need additional consumables, lowering long-term usage costs.

Furthermore, Dominion conducted thermal penetration studies on EON to evaluate the device’s power-temperature relationship and cooling system efficiency. The results demonstrated that researchers were able to safely increase the maximum laser energy delivered to each treatment area by 60% (compared to the baseline power used in initial studies), while maintaining both skin surface and deep tissue temperatures within ideal and safe ranges. By optimizing laser and cooling parameters, EON enables the delivery of higher laser energy to patients without causing thermal injury, thereby achieving safer and more effective treatments.

Although the therapeutic efficacy of EON varies among individuals, studies have demonstrated that a single 60-minute treatment session results in an average fat reduction of 21.6% (with a 25.3% reduction in the lower abdomen). Some patients have experienced fat reduction of up to 40%. Furthermore, EON enables faster treatment speeds, completing full abdominal treatment within 60 minutes and bilateral flank treatment within 40 minutes.
