VCBeat has recently learned that Better MedTech (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (“Better MedTech”) has completed a Pre-A+ financing round of nearly RMB 100 million. The round was co-led by Sunland Capital and Vision Capital, with participation from TusPark Ventures. This round of financing will be used for Better MedTech's continuous innovation, pipeline expansion, and clinical research in its urology and pelvic health product lines.

A Massive Urology Market Worth Billions, Yet a Dedicated Domestic Professional Platform Company Is Still Missing

Urology represents a substantial single-specialty market globally. According to Frost & Sullivan, the global urology market reached $38 billion in 2021 and has been growing at a rate of approximately 5%. The urology sector is also an area of active capital investment. In 2021, Boston Scientific acquired Lumenis’s surgical laser business for $1.07 billion, and in October 2023, Laborie Medical acquired Urotronic, Inc., a company specializing in urological drug-coated balloons, for $600 million. These transactions underscore the high value that commercial giants place on high-quality urological products in mature European and American markets.

In China, the patient base for urological diseases is substantial. With improvements in living standards, shifts in public perception, and a significant increase in the localization rate of equipment and consumables, there has been a marked rise in survey statistics, consultation rates, and treatment rates for urological patients. Various estimates suggest that the total market size for urological equipment and consumables is expected to reach RMB 40–80 billion annually, presenting a significant market opportunity for domestic enterprises.

Grounded in Reality, Aiming High: Building a Comprehensive Ecosystem for Urology and Pelvic Floor Health Products

The urology sector is not only a massive, rapidly growing market but also a highly diversified landscape where a multitude of solutions flourish. For major single-disease indications, multiple schools of thought typically offer distinct therapeutic approaches—ranging from various energy-based and passive devices to other equipment-based treatments—each capturing a significant share of the market. This stands in contrast to certain secondary surgical specialties, where clinical pathways are highly standardized. Since most urological diseases and their treatments impact not only health outcomes but also postoperative recovery and quality of life, there are substantial opportunities for both therapeutic innovation and consumption upgrades. Consequently, no single product can dominate the entire urology market. This reality necessitates that teams maintain keen industry awareness and a relentless drive for innovation.

Since its inception, Better MedTech has positioned itself as a provider of innovative solutions dedicated to the fields of urology and pelvic floor health.Comprehensive and Precise Innovative Product Portfolio in Markets Including Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, Urinary Incontinence, Calculi, and Innovative Oncology Therapies, committed to building a leading brand in the field of urology. Better MedTech has a pipeline of highly differentiated, innovative products aligned with industry trends across several key indications in urologic surgery. Looking ahead, the company will steadfastly pursue its vision of becoming a “leading platform for urological and pelvic floor health in China,” dedicated to delivering more high-quality products that combine superior performance with humanistic care for patients.

Core Product: Sagittarius – Expanding Surgical Coverage with Distinctive Features and Leading Progress

According to the Chinese Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Urological and Andrological Diseases (2022 Edition), the prevalence of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men aged 60 years exceeds 50%. Current surgical approaches primarily consist of transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) or laser procedures; however, postoperative urinary continence and sexual function are not comprehensively preserved.

Better MedTech fully recognizes that, in a sense, urology is a serious medical discipline with “consumer-oriented” attributes. Patients are concerned not only about whether their condition has been cured but also about whether they can enjoy a good quality of life. Guided by this philosophy, Better MedTech has developed a comprehensive suite of solutions covering the entire disease journey for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) at different stages.

Among them,Better MedTech’s independently developed, next-generation long-term implantable suspension stent, “Sagittarius,” features suitability for a broader range of glandular tissues, one-button operation, and reduced rates of surgical failure and device malfunction. In addition to maintaining excellent surgical outcomes (as measured by basic functional indicators such as IPSS and urinary flow rate), this approach significantly mitigates the risk of potential complications associated with traditional surgical procedures (including urinary tract infections, urinary incontinence, and sexual dysfunction). Furthermore, it simplifies what was previously an inpatient procedure into an outpatient one without increasing the patient’s financial burden, and features an extremely short learning curve.

For lower-tier markets, such a solution—offering safety, efficacy, and high cost-effectiveness—is bound to be welcomed by both physicians and patients. For teaching hospitals in first- and second-tier cities, it not only enhances the patient care experience but also significantly improves the utilization rate of medical resources. Currently, the new-generation suspension product, “Sagittarius,” has completed enrollment of its first batch of clinical trial participants.

Regarding this round of financing,Mr. Zhu Yichen, Founder and CEO of Better MedTechstated: “As a platform-oriented enterprise aspiring to become the leader in the urology sector, we remain focused on unmet clinical needs, striving for superior product performance and optimal cost-effectiveness to benefit the general public. The successful completion of this financing round will further accelerate the R&D progress of Better MedTech’s core product pipeline and enhance our organizational structure. It will also drive us to establish a comprehensive product portfolio through medical-engineering collaborations, industrial partnerships, and the introduction of leading innovative technologies from both domestic and international markets, thereby facilitating commercialization and brand building.”

Mr. Gu Shenghan, Executive Director of Sunland CapitalThe statement read: “There is a large patient population with urological diseases, represented by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Emerging ultra-minimally invasive surgical techniques are replacing traditional procedures such as transurethral resection, owing to advantages including fewer complications and significant immediate therapeutic effects. Better MedTech has achieved innovative breakthroughs with its independently designed and developed ‘Sagittarius’ product, which delivers multiple performance improvements over imported alternatives. Meanwhile, the company has established a diversified portfolio of innovative products in the fields of urology and pelvic floor health. We are optimistic about the founding team’s forward-looking vision in pipeline development and their strong execution capabilities in independent R&D and commercialization. We look forward to leveraging Shanghai Sunland’s industrial resources to help the company deliver optimal domestically produced solutions to more patients with urological conditions.”

Ms. Tian Min, Partner at Vision Capitalstated: “Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the largest disease categories in urology. Currently, clinical guidelines in China only cover pharmacological therapy and transurethral resection, leaving a market gap for minimally invasive interventional therapies. In contrast, corresponding fields abroad have seen rapid development along the paths of minimally invasive procedures, outpatient care, and high patient turnover. We anticipate significant growth in domestic minimally invasive interventions as well. Meanwhile, while there are multiple leading companies in the medical device sectors for cardiology and orthopedics in China, the urology field, despite its clear demand, lacks an absolute market leader, presenting substantial opportunities. The Better MedTech team has deep expertise in urology, with experience spanning the entire industry chain of ‘independent R&D + clinical medicine + commercialization.’ Their products highly prioritize the clinical needs of Chinese urologists, significantly improving the treatment experience for Asian patients while better conserving medical resources. We are optimistic about Better MedTech and look forward to its ability to unlock new growth potential in China’s minimally invasive urological intervention sector.”

Ms. Dai Chen, Managing Director of TusPark Ventures“It was stated that ‘China has a vast patient population suffering from urological diseases, with an urgent need for upgrades in treatment modalities. The overall trend in diagnostic and therapeutic devices for urological conditions is shifting towards “minimally invasive” and “outpatient surgical” approaches. We are optimistic about Better MedTech’s comprehensive portfolio in urological diagnostic and therapeutic devices, particularly its independently developed prostate suspension stent. This product is protected by robust intellectual property rights and has demonstrated excellent performance in a series of animal studies and clinical trials. Its unique design enhances procedural convenience for physicians, improves suspension efficacy, and increases surgical success rates, thereby providing patients with maximal functional preservation during treatment. It holds the promise of transforming surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) from “inpatient operating room procedures” into “rapid outpatient procedures resolved within minutes,” bringing significant benefits to BPH patients. We look forward to Better MedTech continuing to introduce a series of innovative urological devices tailored to China’s specific healthcare landscape, establishing itself as the leader in China’s urological device industry.’”
