Abiogenix Files IPO Prospectus for uBox Smart Pill Dispenser Aimed at Improving Medication Adherence

Apr 30, 2015 09:19 CST Updated 09:19

In daily life, we all have experience taking medications, but a common embarrassment is completely forgetting to take them. Do not dismiss this as a trivial matter; in the United States, the direct and indirect losses caused by non-adherence to medication schedules exceed $300 million annually. We know that missed doses significantly diminish therapeutic efficacy, leading to ineffective disease control and even worsening or relapse. Consequently, patients inevitably require repeated emergency visits, outpatient consultations, or hospitalizations, and may incur additional costs for medical devices, thereby driving up overall healthcare costs and wasting resources.

Abiogenix, a company based in San Francisco, USA, has developed a smart hardware device called uBox (see figure below), which effectively addresses this issue. uBox is a personalized medication management tool for patients, capable of safely storing and dispensing pills at the correct times, with information synchronized to a smartphone to record medication adherence. The device features 14 compartments, each holding a single dose, facilitating accurate, pre-measured administration.

In fact, medication non-adherence is not solely due to forgetfulness; other factors also contribute, such as adverse drug reactions, the patient’s belief that medication is unnecessary, unavailability of the medication at hand, cumbersome dosing regimens per medical advice, high medication costs, and the need for dose splitting. Regardless of the underlying cause, uBox provides targeted solutions and helps patients understand the critical importance of proper medication adherence.

Moreover, whether you are taking medication yourself or caring for someone else who is, uBox proves invaluable. It not only sends medication reminders but also logs the time of each dose, allowing for easy review at any moment. We often fail to realize when we miss a dose; however, upon reviewing a month’s worth of records, you may be surprised to discover just how much adherence to medication relies on consistent reminders!

uBox can also share your medication instructions with family members or your private physician, enabling them to remind you to take your medicine on time and accelerate your treatment progress. You can also forward records of timely medication adherence, joining forces with those who care about you to combat illness together.

Simply put,The smart pillbox uBox helps patients adhere to their medication regimens more effectively, offering the following advantages:
1. Simple: When uBox alerts you, it's time to take your medication. With just one container and a single step, the pills will drop into your palm—take your meds now!

2. Portability: When you need to travel to multiple locations, the compact uBox can accompany you anywhere, faithfully safeguarding your health.

3. Exclusive: The uBox features an ingenious design that comprehensively meets diverse medication needs, allowing for personalized settings such as reminder times, schedules, and contact information.

4. Connectivity: Enable family and friends to track your medication adherence in real time; if a dose is missed, they will receive SMS or email alerts to remind you to take the medication.

5. Safety: uBox comes with a built-in lock to prevent children at home from accessing medication indiscriminately, thereby eliminating potential safety hazards.

How does it work?

Step 1: Set Your Medication Schedule

uBox is highly flexible, allowing for customized programming. If medication is taken once daily, you can set it to be administered at the same time each day, or schedule different times for different days—for example, delaying the dose on weekends if you wish to sleep in.

If the same medication is taken twice daily, you can either set specific times for each dose or uniformly schedule it every 12 hours. As the interface provides only 14 slots, you can arrange the weekly medication intake points accordingly.

image010 (1)If medication dosages vary at different times or different medications are required, it is recommended to use a separate uBox for each medication, with the same medication placed in each column.

22Similarly, daily maintenance medications and emergency medications taken on an as-needed basis can also be stored separately in different uBoxes.

Step 2: Take Medication

At medication time, the top of the uBox will flash with a green light. If this is not noticed, the uBox will emit beeping sounds as a reminder. If these are still unheard, the uBox will escalate its alerts by sending a text message to your mobile phone, ensuring foolproof compliance.

Rotate the top locking cap clockwise to the right once:

Thanks to its lightweight and portable design, the uBox is ideal for carrying around. Even more interestingly, if you forget to take it with you when leaving home, it will automatically send a text message to your phone: “Hi, you forgot me!”

Step 3: Loading

If you have run out of medication, open the mobile app and select “Refill My uBox.” Then, follow the prompts to place the medications in the correct slots within the uBox, and remember to take your next dose on time.

Company Origins

uBox was invented by Goutam Reddy and Sara Cinnamon in 2007. Initially, they designed the uBox smart device to support the implementation of Directly Observed Treatment (DOT) programs for tuberculosis in developing countries. The DOT program in India was jointly organized by Innovators In Health and the Prajnopaya Foundation. After winning the grand prize at the Yunus Challenge (which has been an annual MIT competition since 2007 aimed at promoting development in impoverished nations), the duo attempted to launch their startup for two years. However, by the end of 2008, the company exhausted its funds and was forced to cease operations due to financial constraints. Nevertheless, they had already recognized that devices similar to uBox were highly popular among social circles and households in the United States. At that time, however, insufficient preparation in terms of equipment, technology, and funding prevented them from launching the venture. It was not until 2011, observing the continued boom in the smart device market, that they decided to team up and fully commit to bringing uBox to market. After months of hard work, uBox was selected by the Healthbox accelerator alongside nine other companies, securing better resources, mentorship, and financial support to turn uBox into a reality. The name “uBox” stems from their experience treating tuberculosis in India. The “u” stands for the Sanskrit word “upaya,” meaning “compassionately empowered by wisdom.” This concept originates from the Buddhist belief in universal salvation and care for all living beings, aiming to convey empathy through technology and enhance human well-being.
