Wellframe Files IPO Prospectus: Revolutionizing Chronic Care with AI-Powered Patient Engagement Platform

People’s daily lives have never been detached from medical technology, and experts continue to pursue breakthroughs in medicine; therefore, healthcare services have always been a hot spot for investment. Providers of healthcare services face certain challenges in the long-term monitoring of elderly and high-risk patients. The current healthcare system focuses primarily on transmitting medical information back to physicians’ offices, whereas caregivers need an effective means to maintain contact with patients, enabling them to follow medical advice and manage their condition at home.

Now, this unidirectional and inefficient mode of communication can be restructured and improved. Such improvements are not only cost-effective but also enhance patient comfort, helping them maintain a positive and healthy mindset. Wellframe, a digital health company headquartered in Boston, has established a healthcare platform dedicated to delivering personalized services to patients through mobile app-based communication and coordination.

What is Wellframe?

Founded in 2011, Wellframe is an artificial intelligence company specializing in the healthcare sector. It is dedicated to helping patients develop rehabilitation plans through medical data, predictive algorithms, and mobile applications, enabling them to recover their health as early as possible. The company has created a mobile management platform for chronic diseases that provides patients with a navigation system offering professional, specialized guidance and formulating rehabilitation plans to help them manage their conditions. Its to-do list application builds a direct and effective bridge between patients and caregivers, a feature Wellframe CEO Jacob Sattelmair describes as “a GPS navigation system for patients.”

Dr. Trishan Panch, co-founder of the company, emphasized that when describing the future integrated structure of healthcare systems, patients occupy the central position, with all actionable tools and medical resources revolving around this core. The focus of this paradigm shift lies in the management and communication for patients with chronic diseases. “In the realm of acute care, physicians are undoubtedly the managers of health,” pointed out Dr. Trishan Panch. “However, in the management of chronic conditions, patients themselves are the true managers of their health. If clinicians merely serve as suppliers of raw materials within care plans, our work falls short.” With this in mind, Wellframe organizes and leverages medical resources across all systems with a patient-centric approach. Rather than mass-distributing identical care plans to patients, we have created an organization focused on delivering value.

How Does Wellframe Work?

Wellframe’s platform comprises a web-based provider portal and a patient-facing application available to iOS and Android users. The product delivers HIPAA-compliant information and care plans designed to expand, rather than replace, the therapeutic relationship. It translates complex care protocols into rich, multimedia to-do lists that present patients with their individualized care plans. All patient interactions and care plan completion data are collected, analyzed in real time, and displayed on the provider portal. This powerful predictive algorithm enables intelligent alerts, helping physicians identify which patients require specific types of assistance.

The Wellframe app includes two-way communication, automated medication reminders, activity tracking, short-message education, and other brief queries, including prompts for patients to describe their last meal of the day and non-diagnostic mental health questions.

Wellframe’s platform is designed to integrate big data with mobile devices for the treatment of chronic diseases. Through this platform, patients and physicians can communicate directly, enabling doctors to monitor the status of all their patients in real time. Furthermore, Wellframe’s algorithms can predict when patients will require care. Emphasizing that its mobile platform is an integral part of the overall diagnostic and treatment process, Wellframe has been continuously strengthening its collaborations with hospitals.

For example, a heart disease patient who installs the Wellframe app must obtain an activation code from their clinician to register. Each day, Wellframe sends a to-do list tailored to the patient’s condition and delivers reminders based on national cardiac rehabilitation standards. Furthermore, their physician can continue to monitor the patient’s condition via the platform, even remotely.

Wellframe can serve both patients and healthcare institutions. A study report in the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention mentioned that Wellframe offers the following benefits to clinician users: Wellframe can improve the overall quality of cardiac rehabilitation services, while helping to reduce barriers to patient participation in programs, enhancing communication between clinicians and patients, and serving patients. Clinicians need to monitor patient behavior in real time, strengthen communication between doctors and patients, and maintain continuous communication even after diagnosis and treatment. Meanwhile, Wellframe enables clinicians to more proactively manage high-risk patients and engage in early intervention for patients to prevent the occurrence of complications.

What Are the Advantages of Wellframe?

Wellframe has reimagined care plans by redesigning processes around mobile devices, artificial intelligence, and a human-centric approach. It has developed a clinically validated, proprietary method to deliver care plans to patients via mobile devices as dynamically generated, personalized multimedia daily to-do lists. By leveraging medical data, predictive algorithms, and mobile applications, Wellframe helps patients create rehabilitation plans, enabling them to recover their health sooner.

Wellframe’s intelligent care management platform enables organizations to better mitigate clinical and cost risks while amplifying the impact of existing healthcare resources.

Wellframe Milestones

In February 2014, after a year-long pilot program, South Shore Hospital in Boston signed a two-year agreement with Wellframe. Wellframe’s mobile platform was formally integrated into the hospital’s cardiac rehabilitation program. This deal marked the official launch of Wellframe’s first commercial deployment.

On March 16, 2015, Wellframe announced a partnership with Shields Pharmacy Services to expand medication management capabilities, thereby enhancing patient engagement and supporting medication adherence. Shields Pharmacy Services, a system designed to improve the patient service experience by promoting medication adherence, has been integrated into Wellframe’s patient care platform.

Financing Status

In April 2014, the company announced that it had secured $1.5 million in seed funding, with investors including Jonathan Bush, CEO of Athenahealth; Tim Draper of Draper Fisher Jurvetson; and Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran, President of the British Medical Association.

In September 2014, Wellframe announced that it had secured $8.5 million in Series A financing, led by DFJ. With this round of funding, Wellframe will expand its engineering team to accelerate product development.
