Kurbo Health Files IPO Prospectus: A Digital Solution for Childhood Obesity

In recent years, obesity has become a major societal challenge, particularly for overweight children and adolescents, for whom it remains a difficult issue to address. Childhood obesity can lead to hard-to-treat lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, severely impacting daily life. Moreover, it often results in persistent obesity and numerous complications in adulthood. Surveys indicate that 30% of adolescents in the United States are overweight, including 2.5 million individuals aged between 10 and 18. The primary causes include poor self-control, lack of physical activity, and unchecked eating habits among children and teenagers, leading to sustained high body weight and significantly hindering their physical and mental development. However, there is no need for despair: an app designed to effectively manage children’s weight has already been launched, meaning childhood weight loss will no longer be an insurmountable global challenge!

Kurbo is the first mobile weight-loss app specifically developed for children and adolescents. Created by Silicon Valley startup Kurbo Health, it is built upon decades of research from Stanford University. The app intelligently monitors users’ dietary intake and physical activity, sharing this data with professional nutritionists to help users cultivate healthy lifestyle habits. Additionally, experienced coaches provide personalized guidance to support children in achieving their weight-loss goals.

So, how exactly does Kurbo help children lose weight?

1. Coaches provide one-on-one weight-loss exercise guidance
Coaches communicate with children weekly via phone calls or video conferences and provide daily encouragement through text messages, phone calls, or emails. Kurbo matches each child with the most suitable coach based on their goals and interests, and all coaches are seasoned professionals who have undergone rigorous training by behavioral experts at Stanford University.

2. The Traffic Light System Promotes the Development of Healthy Eating Habits
Kurbo’s traffic light system is a straightforward and easy-to-understand food classification framework that enables children to easily identify foods conducive to weight loss while avoiding those that hinder it. Foods are categorized based on their nutritional value; for instance, carbohydrates and sugars are labeled red, whereas vegetables and fruits are labeled green. This approach has been proven safe and effective by Stanford University’s pediatric weight control program.

3. Track and Record Your Child’s Diet and Physical Activity
This mobile app records children’s dietary intake, tracks various exercise metrics, and monitors their weight-loss progress. Designed with simplicity and fun in mind, it is easy for children to use. Through engaging games and videos, the app encourages kids to develop healthy lifestyle habits. It also helps them understand important concepts such as portion sizes and meal planning. Weekly weight-loss challenges foster friendly competition among children, keeping them motivated and consistently engaged in their weight-management journey.

Kurbo Product Features:

1. Remote management, cost-effective
Currently, most weight control programs for children require both children and their parents to attend specific activities at designated locations, which are often prohibitively expensive and pose significant challenges for busy working parents. In contrast, Kurbo enables remote weight loss and weight management for parents and children from the comfort of their homes, at a much more affordable price.

2. Designed for children, promoting a healthy lifestyle
Unlike other weight-loss apps, Kurbo is primarily designed for children and adolescents aged 8 to 18. It goes beyond simply counting food calories. Rather than promoting dieting, Kurbo enables children to make healthier food choices by comparing the nutritional value of different foods, thereby helping them develop healthy lifestyle habits.

3. Transition in Parental Roles
Compared with other weight-loss programs, in the use of Kurbo, parents are no longer strict food controllers but active participants and supporters of the app. Parents can set certain rewards and participate in their children's dietary plans, thereby helping children develop healthy lifestyles through long-term sustained habits.

Since its launch, Kurbo has achieved remarkable results. Currently, more than 1,000 young people are participating in Kurbo’s weight management program, with 90% of children having lost weight within three months through the app. This success has significantly boosted their self-confidence and fostered positive changes in their lifestyle habits.

Kurbo Product Pricing:

Kurbo is not only free to download, but users can also communicate with personal coaches via text or email for a monthly fee of $25, or via phone or video calls for $75 per month. A three-month package costs $180, while a six-month subscription is just $240.
Available coaching options include weekly one-on-one video sessions; on-demand expert consultations via email, text message, and phone; diet and exercise tracking tailored for children and adolescents; and engaging, educational nutrition programs.

Company Origin:

Joanna Strober is a co-founder of Kurbo and a mother of three. As her own children struggled with overweight issues, she actively sought effective ways to help them lose weight. Unwilling to have her children resort to dieting, she explored various tools such as Weight Watchers and MyFitnessPal, only to find that these were designed for adults and unsuitable for children. Consequently, she decided to develop a child-friendly weight management app to help children control their weight and cultivate healthy lifestyle habits. To this end, she co-founded Kurbo Health alongside Thea Runyon, a certified behavior modification specialist, and Mark Vershel, who oversaw technical research and development.

Recognizing the inherent difficulty in balancing work and family life, the team strove to ensure that Kurbo would be convenient for both parents and children during its research and development. The app enables users to manage their weight and adopt healthy lifestyles in a simpler and easier manner. Kurbo’s mission is to develop more effective, convenient, and affordable weight-loss tools to help millions of families and children manage their weight, fostering healthier and happier lives for kids.

Financing Status:

Since its launch in 2013, Kurbo has raised $5.8 million from Signia Venture Partners, Data Collective, and other investors across two funding rounds. To date, the app has been downloaded more than 10,000 times. Among all its investors, Susan Wojcicki, CEO of YouTube, is also one of Kurbo’s early supporters; she invested in Kurbo during its first round of financing in July 2014. She stated, “I rarely invest in startups, but childhood obesity is a serious problem facing the world today, and Kurbo leverages mobile technology to provide an opportunity to address this issue. As a mother of four, I know how difficult it is to help children develop healthy eating habits. But Kurbo makes the process fun.”
