Maidou Health Files IPO Prospectus: A Patient Management Platform Built by Doctors, for Doctors

The most daunting challenge for platforms focused on physician-patient follow-up is undoubtedly how to retain physicians and engage users. For Beijing Maidou Feifan Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Maidou Tech”), this is by no means a difficult task.

Maidou Technology’s products were officially launched last November. Since promotional efforts began in February this year, the platform has attracted over 6,000 physician users, with each doctor managing an average of 20 patients. The combined total of physicians and patients exceeds 120,000. Among its 6,000 physician users, 53% are from Grade A tertiary hospitals, 54% are based in first-tier cities, and 30% hold senior or associate senior professional titles. Currently, physicians from dozens of hospitals, including Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Peking University People’s Hospital, and China-Japan Friendship Hospital, have joined the Maidou Follow-up platform.

Regarding how to retain doctors and engage users, Xu Peng, CEO of Maidou Technology, told VCBeat that to retain doctors, it is essential to understand their true needs. “Entrepreneurs with a background in healthcare systems have a deeper understanding of doctors and can make them feel supported. Currently, internet professionals entering the mobile health sector tend to approach problems from the patient’s perspective, whereas those with medical training prefer to view issues from the doctor’s perspective. This approach is key to genuinely attracting and retaining doctors.”

Xu Peng graduated from Peking University Health Science Center. He previously participated in the founding of a business social networking platform for high-net-worth individuals and a third-party wealth management platform, accumulating extensive entrepreneurial experience. A casual conversation with his university mentor sparked his idea to embark on an entrepreneurial venture in the internet sector.

Prior to this entrepreneurial venture, Xu Peng was frequently seen in hospital outpatient clinics, wards, and physicians’ offices; in medical school classrooms; at traditional healthcare companies; and in the offices of pioneers in the mobile health industry. His objective was to pinpoint physicians’ core needs amid a complex and fragmented market. During nearly six months of site visits, Xu Peng found that physicians’ needs were numerous and highly non-standardized. The “light consultation” models offered by early market entrants held little appeal for high-caliber physicians, who constitute the cornerstone of China’s healthcare system.

There is a gradual learning curve for physicians in adopting mobile internet tools. At present, the immediate priority is to effectively manage the overwhelming volume of outpatient and inpatient cases. This involves regularly monitoring changes in patients’ conditions, guiding their rehabilitation, improving treatment adherence, and ultimately enhancing cure rates—core tenets of physicians’ mission to heal and serve.

Starting from Familiar Doctor-Patient Relationships

“My long-term patients have recovered, or at least no longer need to frequently visit the outpatient clinic just to secure an appointment. This frees up time for me to see new patients, follow up with existing ones, and then attend to more new patients... It is a virtuous cycle.” By leveraging such follow-up platforms, physicians can accumulate a growing base of patients within their specialty, continuously collect first-hand clinical data, and thereby facilitate subsequent research efforts as a natural outcome. Meanwhile, as both new and existing patients gather and share their experiences through word-of-mouth, the physician’s personal brand is gradually established. In a future where “physicians practice independently,” detached from the prestige of hospitals, this will constitute the core competitiveness of physicians.

Consequently, Maidou Technology decided to build a physician follow-up platform based on established doctor-patient relationships. On July 4, 2014, U.S. Independence Day, Maidou Technology was officially founded, marking the inception of “Maidou Follow-up.”

Maidou Technology is committed to leveraging mobile internet technology to build a post-consultation health management platform for doctors and patients. This platform helps doctors accumulate target patient populations, continuously collect clinical data, and efficiently achieve the integration of clinical practice and scientific research. It also empowers patients to effectively manage their health, facilitates doctor-patient communication, and improves doctor-patient relationships.

Currently, Maidou Technology has developed two synergistic products: "Maidou Doctor" (patient-side) and "Maidou Follow-up" (physician-side). The "Maidou Doctor" app and WeChat mini-program, designed for patients, can only be downloaded and accessed via invitation from physicians.

Maidou Follow-up is a platform used by physicians, featuring functions such as patient management, peer communication, research questionnaires, and online clinics.

The patient management feature enables one-click invitations, allowing physicians to effortlessly build their own databases of outpatient and inpatient patients. Patients can be freely grouped and tagged as needed; online text-and-image communication with follow-up patients is supported; patient medical records can be accumulated; and bulk messages, follow-up questionnaires, or health education articles can be sent to patients.

Meanwhile, Maidou Follow-up also helps doctors expand their professional networks and enhance peer-to-peer communication. Doctors can refer patients and share medical records among colleagues, as well as create group chats for both academic discussions and casual conversations.

Furthermore, Maidou Follow-up can customize research follow-up systems for physicians, enabling digitalization of clinical surveys and more.

Meanwhile, the patient-facing Maidou Doctor platform enables post-consultation follow-ups, medical consultations, and expedited healthcare access.

In August 2014, Maidou Technology secured a seven-figure angel investment round led by China Investment Capital and China Fortune Capital. Currently, Maidou Technology is undergoing its Series A financing.
