FT-Health: Democratizing Private Doctor Services for Everyday Chinese Citizens

Sep 02, 2015 08:04 CST Updated 08:04

In developed Western countries, virtually every citizen has their own private physician. These private physicians are all general practitioners (GPs) who maintain a comprehensive understanding of their patients' health status. When residents have health concerns or medication needs, they first consult their private physician. If hospital care is required, the private physician will also facilitate the referral and coordinate with the hospital.

“In China, private physician services are accessible to only a very small fraction of the population. ‘Therefore, we developed the “FT-Health” product with the aim of enabling ordinary Chinese citizens to have their own private physicians and enjoy a comprehensive suite of services, including health record establishment, self-assessment, video consultations, medication guidance, pharmaceutical procurement, rehabilitation therapy, and disease management. Our goal is to make private physician services accessible to the general public,’ said Xu Chunxia, Co-founder of Sichuan Junyi Fudun Technology Co., Ltd.”

FT-Health is a home healthcare service product comprising four components: the W/Me2 smart monitoring module, the Wei Wenzhen APP, cloud storage, and private physicians. Among these, the private physician service is the core of FT-Health.

The W/Me2 weighs 15.8g, measures 4.5cm in length and 1.8cm in width, and comes with two interchangeable straps (black or white), each approximately 2cm wide, for convenient daily wear. The product was launched on JD.com’s crowdfunding platform in May, officially hit the market with shipments in late July, and has sold over 2,000 units to date, including 1,500 units through crowdfunding.

By simply placing the left and right hands on the upper and lower dual electrodes, users can measure blood pressure, electrocardiogram (ECG), heart rate variability (HRV), and fatigue levels in real time. The W/Me2 also features health-oriented step counting, calorie burn tracking, sleep monitoring, and professional sports tracking. As a wearable device, battery life is of paramount importance; this smart band offers an impressive battery life of up to 144 hours.

It is worth noting that the W/Me2 adopts a medical-grade, single-lead, dual-electrode measurement method to accurately capture cardiac electrical signals generated by the sinoatrial node in the right atrium. It is also the world’s first ECG sensing module supporting multiple wearable forms. The company is currently applying for patents and has already received a notice of acceptance. Xu Chunxia stated that most smart wearable devices on the market capable of capturing average heart rate rely on optical sensor measurements. These sensors emit green light through the skin to measure blood flow velocity, thereby estimating the current heart rate. However, this method requires close contact with the skin and restricts rapid wrist movement, leading to deviations in heart rate calculations. In the context of telemedicine applications, electrocardiograms (ECGs) offer far greater potential for subsequent clinical use than a simple average heart rate value.

Xu Chunxia revealed that during the R&D phase, they conducted measurements on over 5,000 users, achieving an accuracy rate of more than 85%. The standard for accuracy was determined by comparing the measurement data with readings from a mercury sphygmomanometer, with a permissible deviation of ±8 mmHg.

FT-Health vs. Market Blood Pressure Monitors: Data Comparison Chart

She stated, “Currently, smart wearable devices featuring blood pressure monitoring are often compared with similar medical devices in terms of accuracy. However, as a home-based health service product, we place greater emphasis on long-term blood pressure trend monitoring and providing early warnings to users when significant fluctuations occur. For instance, if a user’s blood pressure suddenly rises above their preset threshold, the measurement data will be automatically sent to the emergency contact numbers designated by the user, and our backend system will also generate an alert.”

Via Bluetooth connectivity, data measured by W/Me2 is uploaded to the company’s proprietary app, Wei Wenzhen, for display and analysis. Users can also establish personal health records through a dedicated team of private physicians on the audio-video consultation platform; these records are permanently stored in the cloud. The app also features LBS (Location-Based Services) functionality, allowing users to share their location information with family and friends.

In addition, users can view information on nearby pharmacies and enjoy complimentary home delivery services from contracted pharmacies. Xu Chunxia told VCBeat, “We currently partner with nearly 30,000 pharmacies. Pharmacies can promote their brands on our platform, and we will use location-based features to recommend the nearest pharmacy to each user.”

Private physician services are the core of FT-Health. Xu Chunxia revealed that the platform currently employs over 300 full-time doctors and pharmacists across China. These professionals possess extensive expertise spanning general practice, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, gynecology, and other specialties. The private physicians primarily provide users with the following services: 24/7 availability; interpretation of medical examination reports and clinical records; establishment of health records, regular health assessments, and the formulation and tracking of personalized health plans.

Currently, private physician services are offered on an annual subscription basis. Users who purchase the W/Me2 intelligent monitoring module this year will receive a complimentary one-year exclusive private physician service package, priced at RMB 1,199. The standalone annual subscription for the physician service alone is priced at RMB 1,095.

Xu Chunxia believes that precise measurement data, thoughtful service, and the ability to truly address user needs are the key factors enabling FT-Health to retain its users. She outlined the following main advantages of FT-Health:
1. The intelligent monitoring module is convenient and portable, allowing for blood pressure and heart rate variability monitoring anytime, anywhere.
2. In-house full-time physician team for streamlined management and enhanced service quality
3. Access to doctors or pharmacists for consultations via audio and video is available 24/7;
4. Dedicated one-on-one service for a more harmonious doctor-patient relationship
5. Monitor family members' data to keep track of their health status at any time
6. Provide real-time monitoring of professional exercise zones to help users understand their physical fitness distribution
7. Out-of-Threshold Alarm Function: Adding an Extra Layer of Protection for Life

Regarding the company’s product planning and strategic layout, Xu Chunxia stated that in the early stage of market entry, the focus will be on providing broad-based services. In the future, the company will tailor exclusive service offerings to different user segments, enabling users to designate specific physicians for specialized care and delivering products that meet their actual needs. The company will also iterate and upgrade its smart wearable devices to enrich product functionalities, thereby enabling users to perform self-examinations and self-monitoring at home. In terms of usability, improvements will be made to better accommodate elderly users. Additionally, establishing a one-stop triage and consultation service is a key development priority for the company, aiming to integrate online and offline services by offering features such as online appointment scheduling with waived registration fees or home visits by physicians.

Fudun Technology Co., Ltd. was established in 2011 and began its transformation into the internet sector in 2014. Targeting China’s nearly 300 million chronic disease patients as its user base, the company aims to build China’s largest free pharmaceutical and medical service platform. Currently, Junyi Fudun’s operations span more than 15 provinces across China, with its employee count growing from 22 at inception to 500 today. This August, the company secured RMB 100 million in angel and Series A financing, led by Tiantu Capital, and is currently preparing for Series B funding.
