VB Salon No.11: Exploring Rehabilitation Systems in the U.S., Japan, and China – Charting the Future of China’s Rehabilitation Industry

Sep 10, 2015 08:01 CST Updated 08:01

The U.S. rehabilitation market is estimated at nearly $50 billion; how large is China’s rehabilitation market?

China’s elderly population has surpassed the 200 million mark, accounting for 14.8% of the total national population. Among them, there are significant numbers of seniors who have lost their only child, those with disabilities, and “left-behind” elderly individuals whose children have migrated for work. Approximately 70 million older adults require rehabilitation services. As population aging intensifies, the number of elderly people with full or partial disabilities continues to rise. An increasing number of injured and ill seniors will enter long-term care facilities or return home to receive care while living with chronic conditions, imposing substantial pressure on both society and families. Coupled with a large population disabled by chronic diseases, there is immense demand for rehabilitation services in Chinese society.

How Should China’s Rehabilitation Path Develop? On September 13, we invited three experts to elaborate on the rehabilitation models and systems of Canada, Japan, and China, respectively, aiming to draw on their strengths and, in light of China’s national conditions, explore a path uniquely suited to our country.
