The Dawn of the DT Era: Cloud Computing Becomes the Service Provider for the Internet Healthcare Ecosystem. In 2014, Alibaba Cloud launched the “Cloud Union Initiative,” aggregating over 50 industry-specific solutions on its platform, with healthcare being a key focus. In the first half of 2015 alone, more than 400 internet healthcare companies went live on its cloud healthcare platform. Recently, Alibaba Cloud has begun to strategically position itself in the realm of human body data, announcing a partnership with Shenzhen Zhongruiqi and Hangzhou Jinwei Health to jointly establish the “Cloud-Based Peace of Mind” Alliance.
The “Peace of Mind on the Cloud” Alliance brings together community hospitals, tertiary general hospitals, medical hardware manufacturers, health and wellness apps, health examination centers, and providers of healthcare analytics models. With patients’ informed consent and authorization, it consolidates and integrates dispersed health and medical data to enable data-driven precision medicine.
To create a digital twin of an individual, continuous, long-term, and comprehensive data are required, including blood glucose, blood pressure, electrocardiogram (ECG), and other metrics. Among these diverse data types, Alibaba Cloud has chosen to focus on ECG as its entry point to address the challenge of cardiac health management.
After users properly wear the “Hao Pengyou” ECG monitor from the “Cloud Peace of Mind” alliance and connect it to the “Hao Pengyou ECG” app, they can view their own ECG data. Meanwhile, the data is synchronized with hospitals, allowing doctors or emergency centers to intervene early if abnormalities are detected. Wang Yuansi, founder of Zhongruiqi, stated, “This product is developed directly for individual consumers and provides professional medical care services.”
All data from ecosystem participants of the “Cloud-Based Peace of Mind” Alliance will be hosted on Alibaba Cloud, leveraging its robust computing capabilities and open ECG algorithms to achieve parallel processing of hundreds of millions of data points. This includes processes such as ECG recording, filtering of ECG noise, and extraction of feature values (e.g., P wave, R wave, ST segment). Furthermore, offline and real-time data processing can be conducted through Alibaba Cloud’s big data processing platform ODPS and Analytic Database for Service (ADS), enabling rapid integration of additional standardized applications and third-party medical data.
Wu Kai, Senior Product Expert at Alibaba Cloud, stated that the alliance will center on ECG data to integrate hospital biochemical indicators and diagnostic data with out-of-hospital ECG and blood glucose data, as well as other fragmented data such as vital signs and physical activity. This aims to provide a more comprehensive and multidimensional description of a patient’s health status, thereby achieving the goals of precision medicine.
According to reports, electrocardiogram (ECG) data collection is similar to audio data acquisition, characterized by high-frequency sensor sampling and massive data volumes. An individual’s 24-hour ECG recording amounts to approximately 150 MB. Given that the human heart beats 2.5–3 billion times over a lifetime, this generates an average of 4,394 GB of ECG data per person. In the current field of medical engineering, both static in-hospital ECG data and dynamic ambulatory ECG data are typically left unused or deleted after disease diagnosis due to their enormous storage requirements.
Wu Kai stated that leveraging these data would yield immeasurable value for the detection of cardiovascular diseases across China. “The challenge lies in the fact that massive volumes of electrocardiogram (ECG) data require not only infinitely scalable storage capacity but also robust data processing and analytical capabilities, both of which are strengths of Alibaba Cloud.”
Currently, Alibaba Cloud is actively engaging in discussions with leading cardiovascular hospitals in China to explore collaboration opportunities, aiming to build a rich, comprehensive, and dynamic electrocardiogram (ECG) database for the nation. By establishing an ECG database based on the Chinese population, it seeks to support scientific research by scientists and academic institutions, improve the diagnostic accuracy of heart diseases, and reduce the false alarm rate in real-time monitoring.
In addition, Zhongruiqi’s Haopengyou ECG monitor, a partner product of Alibaba Cloud, will also ensure the accuracy of data collection. It is reported that this product has obtained medical device certification and CE certification.
The "Home Friendly" ECG machine is an 8-lead diagnostic-grade device that complies with ECG machine standards. Its working principle is fundamentally consistent with that of conventional 12-lead hospital ECG machines. The product features Bluetooth transmission for real-time display of ECG waveforms and an embedded TF card within the acquisition box for storing and replaying ECG data, offering two operational modes. During ECG data collection, users can press a button to mark abnormalities if they experience cardiac discomfort. After data collection is complete, the intelligent ECG interpretation software allows for playback to review the ECG waveforms recorded during periods of cardiac discomfort. In this mode, users can move around freely; the device’s built-in memory card can continuously record heart activity for up to 90 hours and supports playback.
