Among these, the most notable is CVS MinuteClinic. As its name suggests, CVS MinuteClinic operates as a quick “one-minute” clinic, also known as a walk-in clinic. Patients are not required to register or make appointments in advance; they can simply walk into the clinic, describe their symptoms to a nurse, and receive prompt evaluation and treatment from a physician—hence the term “walk-in.” Characterized by convenience and efficiency, these clinics remain open during evenings and weekends. By offering only basic medical services, they ensure both shorter visit times and lower costs for patients.

CVS operates the largest number and scale of retail clinics in the United States. In 2013, CVS’s MinuteClinic served more than 18 million patients, and the company announced plans to open 1,500 locations across 35 U.S. states by 2017.

By leveraging its established electronic health record (EHR) system, CVS seamlessly integrates MinuteClinic, CVS retail pharmacies, and partner hospitals. This interconnected network enables the sharing of medical records and medication reminders issued by CVS pharmacies to patients. Furthermore, MinuteClinic can synthesize diagnostic findings from each patient visit to partner hospitals, reassess the patient’s condition, and update the new medical records with these diagnostic results in real time.
