Yunzhongfei Files IPO Prospectus: The Smart Anti-Snoring Device Backed by JD.com

Dec 29, 2015 08:04 CST Updated 08:04

Yunzhongfei is a smart anti-snoring device. Users simply need to wear the device on their ears according to the recommended guidelines while sleeping. Reportedly, the product’s exterior was designed by the Red Dot design team; it weighs only 20 grams and features a housing made of food-grade silicone. If snoring occurs during sleep, Yunzhongfei automatically activates its anti-snoring mode and records data for user reference. With sleep quality monitoring enabled, the device can operate for up to five nights on a single charge.

According to reports, Yunzhongfei was officially launched in November 2014. In December of the same year, it participated in an entrepreneurship competition hosted by JD.com and Chuangyejia’s “i Spokesperson” program, ultimately winning the Grand Prize for Best Chinese Product. In January 2015, Yunzhongfei launched a crowdfunding campaign on JD.com, quickly raising over RMB 1.3 million. Within five months of its market debut, sales of the first-generation product exceeded 30,000 units. Research and development of the second-generation product commenced shortly thereafter, with its crowdfunding campaign kicking off on JD.com in November.

Luo Qiang, founder of Yunzhongfei, noted that snoring is a widespread phenomenon, affecting 70% of adults worldwide. In China, nearly 200 million people suffer from severe cases. Furthermore, as snoring is incurable and the respiratory tract muscles gradually weaken with age, anyone may develop the condition, resulting in a generally long product lifecycle for anti-snoring solutions. Facing this vast user market, numerous smart devices—such as watches, neckbands, pillows, and mattresses that intervene in snoring by delivering electrical stimulation signals—are continuously emerging, alongside the use of ventilators by some patients. However, certain methods can cause harm to users, such as nasal bleeding.

The product has been granted patent technology and has passed clinical validation.

With a background in physics, Luo Qiang spent over two decades working in the semiconductor industry. As market dynamics evolved and his former company sought transformation, Luo evaluated numerous product opportunities, only to find that most existing markets were already saturated with intense competition. Consequently, he aimed to identify an untapped niche with significant market potential. Leveraging his 20 years of experience in the electronics sector, Luo and his colleagues dedicated nearly two years to research and development, ultimately launching this product. Its efficacy has been validated through clinical trials, feedback from friends and family, and user trials involving 5,000 participants recruited via WeChat, all of whom affirmed the product’s effectiveness.

This anti-snoring device uses bone conduction and audio analysis to determine whether the user is snoring. Upon detecting snoring signals, it delivers auditory or vibratory stimuli to intervene without waking the user, thereby achieving snore reduction.

Luo Qiang told VCBeat that human snoring typically lasts for about four seconds. The anti-snoring device completes monitoring and activates its anti-snoring mode within one second. While snoring stimulates the muscles of the respiratory tract, the device enhances muscle tone in this area through auditory stimulation via earbuds and vibratory stimulation of the ears, thereby achieving an anti-snoring effect.

Why was the product designed in an earphone form factor? Luo Qiang explained that, on one hand, snoring primarily originates in the nasal cavity and throat, which are anatomically close to the ears, making intervention more convenient. On the other hand, the ears are highly sensitive, so even subtle stimulation can elicit a strong physiological response. In contrast, wrist-worn anti-snoring devices face challenges in effectively transmitting signals, making it difficult to provoke a user’s reaction. The bone conduction technology we employ is only feasible for implementation on the head.

According to Luo Qiang, the “snoring intervention technology based on recognition using multiple index parameters, including bone conduction and sound,” developed by the Yunzhongfei team, has obtained independent intellectual property rights and has passed clinical efficacy validation.

In collaborative experiments conducted with the Nanfang Sleep Medicine Center of Southern Medical University, Yunzhongfei demonstrated significant efficacy. Test results showed that users wearing Yunzhongfei experienced a reduction in apnea episodes by more than half, along with improved oxygen saturation and blood oxygen levels, as well as prolonged deep sleep duration.

Luo Qiang stated that there are many causes of snoring. The Yunzhongfei anti-snoring device addresses the issue from the perspective of muscle relaxation and contraction, rather than providing a therapeutic solution. As the laxity of respiratory tract muscles is irreversible, this product cannot cure snoring.

Leveraging Hardware and Cloud Data for Joint Profitability

In addition to the hardware, Yunzhongfei is also equipped with a Snore Recorder app. Through the app, users can view their snoring and sleep data. Luo Qiang stated that the product will incorporate sleep-assistance features in the future.

One of Yunzhongfei’s profit drivers is hardware sales. In addition to leveraging e-commerce and retail channels, the company is also striving to introduce this product through professional medical channels. Its partner, Meinian Onehealth Healthcare, is currently collaborating with professional medical institutions to evaluate the product’s efficacy. Luo Qiang stated that they are also applying for a medical device registration certificate through their partners to remove barriers to entering the medical market.

In addition, the organization and analysis of cloud-based data represent another revenue stream for Yunzhongfei. Luo Qiang stated that the product currently has over 30,000 users. As the user base expands, the volume of data stored in the cloud will continue to grow, enabling the team to conduct analyses based on this data and develop an expert system.

It is reported that Yunzhong Feitian’s angel round was jointly funded by Tsinghua Holdings Kechuang and Zhongwei Fund, with a total investment of RMB 6 million. Currently, the team is conducting its Pre-A financing round, aiming to raise approximately RMB 10 million.
