Medical Examination Service Provider
A black long-sleeved shirt paired with a white vest, dark gray trousers matched with burgundy ankle boots, a neat updo, and light makeup. On January 16, at the “Love Life, Record Health – Meinian & Ciming Joint Press Conference,” Han Xiaohong’s casual attire came as quite a surprise.
“I’ve never dressed like this for a formal occasion before,” Han Xiaohong told VCBeat with a smile. “Ji Jiankang is an internet product related to healthcare. I considered wearing sportswear, but felt that would be too drastic a change. This outfit is a compromise.”
This marks the first joint public appearance of Health 100 and Ciming since their merger. Former Apple CEO John Sculley, Tencent Vice President Ma Bin, and relevant officials from the National Health and Family Planning Commission were all in attendance. The press conference, held at Ciming’s headquarters, was packed to capacity in a venue accommodating approximately 200 people.
Why Be Together?
On the eve of the press conference, VCBeat conducted an exclusive interview with Han Xiaohong, who spoke most extensively about her original intention in establishing the health checkup service: to deliver effective health management.
“I want to thank the hardships, tribulations, and suffering I endured during my entrepreneurial journey; they have shaped Ciming into what it is today, and have made me who I am.” At the press conference, Han Xiaohong was momentarily overcome with emotion, her voice choking up. On the large screen behind her, the six Chinese characters for “Gratitude, Thanks, Appreciation” were prominently displayed.
Han Xiaohong, who holds a medical doctorate from Heidelberg University in Germany, could have chosen to return to hospital practice as an oncologist. However, she recognized that many cancer patients could benefit from early detection and treatment through health screenings. This insight prompted her to enter the health screening industry. In 2002, Han Xiaohong co-founded Ciming Health Checkup with her husband, Hu Bo.
Over the subsequent decade, Han Xiaohong endured the loss of her father to cancer and underwent treatment for gastric cancer herself. Her survival was attributed to the early detection enabled by health screenings. This experience further solidified her resolve to dedicate herself to the health screening industry, ultimately propelling Ciming Health Checkup into the top three players in the sector.
From a business perspective, the acquisition of Ciming, which had originally planned an independent IPO, by Meinian Onehealth was not the outcome Han Xiaohong had initially anticipated. However, from a longer-term viewpoint, the merger is conducive to the development of the entire industry and more beneficial to customers.
In Han Xiaohong’s view, the merger of the two companies has transformed their previous competitive landscape into one of “coopetition.” The former tripartite balance among iKang Guobin, Meinian Onehealth (Health 100), and Ciming has now evolved into a duopoly between Meinian Onehealth and iKang Guobin. Following the merger of Ciming and Meinian Onehealth, the combined entity will operate more than 200 offline health checkup centers and employ 30,000 staff members. By sharing data and resources, the two parties will accelerate the informatization and internet-based transformation of the health checkup industry.
“Our union is not a simple addition of numbers, but the creation of a great platform for China’s health industry,” said Yu Rong, Chairman of Health 100. “The significance of our merger goes far beyond commercial success; more importantly, by joining forces, we can create increasing opportunities and platforms that benefit more outstanding entrepreneurs, as well as our customers, patients, and partners.”
"Ji Jiankang," a Health Management Platform with Over 100 Million Data Points
In 2012, Han Xiaohong led her team to establish a membership-based, privately customized health management hospital—Ciming Aoya Health Management Hospital—over the course of four years. This model addressed the issue of patient compliance through high costs, substantial investment, and significant membership fees; however, its scalability was limited. Han Xiaohong sought to leverage internet tools and partner with Meinian Onehealth (Health 100) to promote this model nationwide across China.
Han Xiaohong believes that the internet, mobile healthcare, big data, and cloud computing provide the industry with an opportunity to address health management challenges through low-cost, high-efficiency means. “Through our data platform, we can facilitate doctor-patient communication, enable mutual selection between doctors and patients, overcome geographical barriers, and resolve language obstacles.” Ji Jiankang is a key platform for achieving this goal.
Ji Jiankang is a health management service platform that integrates big data with medical services. It utilizes physical examination centers and outpatient departments as data entry points, enabling physicians to track and manage clients on the platform, thereby establishing a comprehensive health service system spanning from prevention to treatment. Ji Jiankang features four core functions: Record Health, Measure Health, Manage Health, and Protect Health. A prerequisite for realizing these functions is the digitization of physical examination report data, which has been a key focus for Ciming over the past two years.
“While others are searching for customers, our customers are already there; I just need to serve them through a data-driven platform,” said Han Xiaohong.
According to Dr. Kang Guixia, Chief Scientist at Ji Jiankang and a Ph.D. graduate from Germany, the digitization of medical examination reports may appear straightforward but is, in fact, highly challenging, as it relies on the informatization of offline examination institutions and the standardization of data. Three major challenges must be addressed: First, health information must be comprehensive, ensuring that customers’ complete health records are displayed on their mobile devices without any omissions. Second, user experience must be optimized, requiring robust technical support to present hundreds of health data points on mobile screens. Third, terminal coverage must be extensive, ensuring compatibility with the vast majority of smartphones for report access. Apart from imaging data, all other medical examination data have now been fully digitized.
Ji Jiankang can also compare users' historical health checkup data to identify trends in certain indicators. Users can consult relevant experts regarding these changes, and such expert consultation services are currently free of charge.
Ce Health has launched “Xiao Cha Arrives,” a product that enables early cancer screening through a single drop of blood. Within one month, Ce Health streamlined the entire process from offline blood collection and testing to online appointment scheduling and report viewing. During the same period, it established 158 blood collection and testing facilities across China. Within 100 days of its launch, the service achieved 200,000 sales and appointments.
“Xiao Cha Arrives” is positioned as a global platform for the translation and commercialization of diagnostic technologies. In the future, it will launch services including risk assessment for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, Alzheimer’s disease testing, and genetic testing. Ji Jiankang’s plan involves online purchase and appointment scheduling, offline distributed blood collection, online interpretation of test reports, and referral of users with abnormal results to offline facilities for secondary, in-depth services.
Health management and health preservation functions rely on offline medical resources. The offline resources owned by Ciming and Meinian Onehealth are primarily physical examination centers, while access to a broader range of medical institution resources must be achieved through partnerships. This was the original intention behind Ciming and Meinian Onehealth establishing the Ji Health Industry Alliance.
“We will have 100 million health checkup data records in the next three to five years, so we need to build a large industrial ecosystem to link various resources and provide services to our customers,” said Han Xiaohong. In the era of the Internet, the Internet of Things, and big data, alliances can promote integration across industries, breaking down industrial, corporate, and organizational boundaries.
The founding organizational members of the Ji Health Industry Alliance include Peking University Medical Industry Group, China-Japan Friendship Hospital, Datong Finance, Donghua Software, Quanyu Healthcare, Beijing Yilian Zongheng, and Taikang Pension. Following the establishment of the alliance, Ji Health will share its resources with all member organizations, serving as the alliance’s primary gateway, while the alliance will function as Ji Health’s offline resource network.
“I now wear three hats: investor, resource integrator, and entrepreneur,” Han Xiaohong told VCBeat. Ji Jiankang is her new venture platform and a continuation of the original mission behind her founding of the physical examination institution. By leveraging internet platforms and integrating resources through business collaborations and equity investments, Han is confident she can build the premier health management platform.
