Year of the Goat Final Report: Big Data Insights and Product Overview of China's Internet Healthcare Sector

Feb 03, 2016 08:00 CST Updated 08:00

The First China Internet Healthcare Power List Has Concluded. The years 2014–2015 were marked by significant controversy as well as substantial achievements. We have decided to employ a lightweight data approach to review the developments in China’s internet healthcare sector over the past two years, highlighting both major and minor initiatives undertaken by industry participants.

1. The total valuation of the internet healthcare sector has exceeded RMB 210 billion.

Among the 185 startups that entered the final nomination stage and had available data, the total valuation exceeded RMB 210 billion. Six of these companies were valued at over RMB 10 billion each, with a combined valuation of RMB 74.5 billion. Seventy-four percent of the companies (137 in total) were valued at under RMB 1 billion, accounting for a cumulative valuation of RMB 54.1 billion.

This data indicates that internet healthcare has officially become a major player, possessing the foundation to evolve into a large-scale industry.

2. Temporary Lead Outside Hospitals, Accumulated Momentum Within

We have conducted a categorical statistical analysis of startups. Currently, out-of-hospital segments—such as genetic testing, pharmaceutical e-commerce, and online consultations—hold a dominant position, accounting for over 80% of the market valuation. The in-hospital segment is primarily focused on smart hospital development and physician groups. However, it is projected that in 2016, startups centered around physicians and hospital management will emerge and grow in large numbers, gradually balancing the market landscape.

3. Hospitals Have Awakened: Over 60% of Hospitals Now Have Their Own Apps

Among the 30 hospitals we nominated, 20 have their own mobile apps, and one-third have achieved HIMSS Level 6 or Level 7 certification. All 30 hospitals are classified as Grade A Tertiary (San Jia) institutions, with 24 being large general hospitals. Internet healthcare is far from being merely a frenzy among tech professionals; the revolutionary forces within the medical sector itself are remarkably powerful.

4. Physicians are highly active, answering an average of 18.5 questions per day

We compiled statistics on the 495 physicians who made the final nomination list, with those from secondary hospitals accounting for 69% and those from tertiary hospitals for 22%. Obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics remained the most popular specialties, collectively representing nearly 30% of the total. Physicians in obstetrics and gynecology also ranked first in public health education efforts.

5. Investment institutions were highly active, making 187 investments in 2015

I’ll share a piece of data that may be unfamiliar to many. In 2015, there were 26 institutions that invested in more than two companies.

Below, please take a look at VCBeat’s final brief report of the Year of the Goat. Wishing you all a Happy New Year!
