According to Health IT News, UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) is set to acquire a significant stake in medCPU. Additionally, in the second quarter of this year, UPMC will lead medCPU’s new round of financing, amounting to $35 million. UPMC will serve as the lead investor, while Merck Global Innovation Fund, the lead investor in medCPU’s Series B round, will also continue to participate. The funds raised will be used to expand the company’s business operations.
UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) is a leading non-profit healthcare organization in the United States and one of the most renowned academic research medical centers in the country. UPMC Enterprises, the commercial arm of UPMC, has proposed to purchase a significant stake from medCPU’s non-employee shareholders. Upon completion of the acquisition, UPMC is expected to become a major shareholder of medCPU.
UPMC will also become a new customer of medCPU and jointly develop new products with the company. Headquartered in New York, medCPU is a healthcare company that provides clinical decision support solutions.
medCPU provides a comprehensive clinical picture of each patient, ranging from their earliest medical history to their current condition. When integrated into a clinician’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, medCPU’s advisory and enterprise platform technologies capture and analyze relevant patient data. This technologically assessed data offers clinicians an overview of the patient’s condition and delivers highly accurate, real-time, and reliable alerts during care delivery.
“Our partnership with medCPU will introduce new technologies and problem-solving solutions to UPMC, creating a highly positive impact on both physicians’ workflows and patient care,” said Tal Heppenstall, Chairman of UPMC. He added that in the near future, medCPU’s technology will further drive the development of other data-driven applications in areas such as care management, population health monitoring, and consumer engagement, holding significant promise for the future.
Interestingly, UPMC, serving as both a customer and a co-developer of new products, has invited the renowned healthcare data management and analytics firm Health Catalyst to join its team. This powerful partnership aims to develop optimal new products, generating considerable anticipation.
As for medCPU, its co-founder and CEO, Eyal Ephrat, stated that the company will establish a dedicated studio in Pittsburgh, hiring more than 20 talented engineers and other staff to collaborate with UPMC on developing new products and services aimed at improving existing solutions that still have limitations.
