Apple Launches CareKit, an Open-Source Framework for Personal Health Management

Mar 23, 2016 08:00 CST Updated 08:00

In the early hours of March 22, 2016 (Beijing Time), during Apple’s shortest-ever product launch event, Chief Operating Officer (COO) Jeff Williams unveiled CareKit, an open-source framework for health applications, which was scheduled to be released in April.

Both CareKit and ResearchKit, released last year, are medical-grade open-source health applications. However, in addition to supporting medical research like ResearchKit, CareKit enables patients to track and share their own health data. It can assist Parkinson’s disease patients with personal care, monitor medication efficacy, and even support users in maintaining general wellness.

To gain a clearer understanding of Apple’s strategic intentions in the healthcare sector, VCBeat will provide an analysis from the following perspectives.

I. How did ResearchKit perform previously?

At the press conference, Jeff Williams stated that the primary purpose of ResearchKit is to leverage technology to address challenges in medical research, enable broader participation in such studies, and obtain more precise data through Apple devices. “Overnight, our research initiative became the largest of its kind. For instance, within 24 hours, we established the world’s largest Parkinson’s disease study.” Apple’s research efforts transcend geographical boundaries, with numerous universities and research institutions now participating, covering a significant portion of the global population and addressing a wide range of diseases.

II. Why Was CareKit Launched After ResearchKit?

In the application of ResearchKit, Apple discovered that tools designed to enhance medical research can also improve healthcare outcomes. “For example, in Parkinson’s disease patients, the gesture controls demonstrated in videos help patients record data. Researchers can view patient data in real time to monitor whether their condition is improving and whether the medication is effective.”

ResearchKit can provide physicians treating Parkinson’s disease patients with real-time data to track medication efficacy. Jeff Williams provided a specific example: “For instance, Patient A’s daily data are recorded, showing improvement in their condition after medication. In contrast, other patients, such as Patient B, do not experience improvement, and the medication is not very effective for them. Therefore, it is important to distinguish between these two types of patients.” However, in such scenarios, neither the patients themselves nor their caregivers have access to this information. Empowering patients with such data is crucial, which is why we are launching CareKit today.

III. What are the specific applications of CareKit currently?

CareKit is an open-source application framework that enables developers to build customized health apps. At the launch event, Jeff Williams showcased two apps developed using CareKit.

The first application is primarily designed for patients with Parkinson’s disease. Apple has partnered with six major institutions, including the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, to conduct trials of this app in the near future. The goal is to gain a deeper understanding of Parkinson’s disease and provide tailored treatments for different patients.

The second app was developed in collaboration with the Texas Medical Center using the CareKit framework. It provides patients with a novel experience, transforming the era when medical records were limited to paper documents.

Patients are required to personally complete the “CareCard,” detailing specific information such as their body temperature and whether they have an infection.

Share with family, friends, and doctors. Doctors can dynamically generate reports based on the patient’s condition.

Jeff Williams stated, “Health records in the CareKit app will definitely be kept confidential.”

Not long ago, Apple and the FBI had a major disagreement over whether to unlock an iPhone, with Apple demonstrating its “unyielding stance” on protecting user privacy data. As an open-source data platform involving large volumes of user information, CareKit presents a significant challenge for Apple in safeguarding user privacy.

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic,” as British science fiction author Arthur Clarke once said. We hope CareKit will bring magical benefits to patients.
