Medidata Leverages Big Data and Cloud Platform to Reduce Clinical Trial Costs

Apr 21, 2016 08:00 CST Updated 08:00

On March 10, Medidata Solutions announced a mobile health collaborative research partnership with Nestlé in China to evaluate the impact of nutritional supplements and exercise on the physical health of older adults. The study will reportedly utilize trackers and mobile applications from Garmin, the world’s fourth-largest wearable device manufacturer, for monitoring purposes.

Medidata has been dedicated to providing cloud-based development solutions for the life sciences, revolutionizing the landscape of clinical trials through intelligent data analytics. What sets the Medidata Clinical Cloud apart? How has Medidata Solutions, Inc. managed to stand out in this era defined by “data”? Let VCBeat’s editor explain it all for you.

Launch Clinical Trials in Collaboration with Nestlé

In May 2015, the Nestlé Research Center, a subsidiary of Nestlé, initiated a clinical trial investigating the combination of a nutritional product with a specific exercise regimen. All study participants were required to wear Garmin vívofit activity trackers to collect data on their physical activity and daily movements. Additionally, participants used Medidata’s patient electronic record software to complete questionnaires regarding quality of life and other metrics via smartphones or tablets. Monitoring data from the Garmin activity trackers and daily self-reported data from Patient Cloud were all imported into the Medidata Clinical Cloud platform. Medidata Clinical Cloud then integrated all received data, performing real-time recording, analysis, and summarization to gain insights into participant behaviors, treatment outcomes, and other relevant factors.

Mr. Mike Capone, Chief Operating Officer of Medidata, stated, “We have been committed to advancing the application of mobile health tools in highly structured clinical trials, and we believe this will bring significant value to scientific research initiatives. This exciting collaboration with Nestlé is part of our ongoing efforts. Wearable devices, sensors, and applications collect real-time data from study participants while providing a comprehensive view of their daily activities, physical condition, and well-being. We are immensely proud of this mobile health platform, as it enables Nestlé to provide nutritional support to individuals, thereby helping them lead healthier and happier lives.”
