On April 22, Chunyu International, a domestic cross-border medical service provider, held a cooperation signing ceremony with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the United States. Chunyu International has become Cedars-Sinai’s first internet-sector partner in China, formally establishing a collaborative relationship and creating a green channel for Chinese patients seeking medical treatment in the U.S.
The partnership between Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Chunyu International will extend into the mobile internet sector. Authoritative physicians from Cedars-Sinai will engage in in-depth communications, both online and offline, with doctors and patients on the Chunyu platform. Future advancements in medical research at Cedars-Sinai will be authorized for synchronized updates on Chunyu International’s platform in real time. Patients on the Chunyu International platform with relevant needs will first undergo remote consultation and assessment by designated specialists from Cedars-Sinai. Provided that a tangible improvement in medical outcomes is anticipated, Chunyu International will facilitate arrangements for overseas medical treatment. Upon the patients’ return to China, Chunyu International will provide private physician services to assist with long-term follow-up care in coordination with Cedars-Sinai.
Cross-border healthcare refers to the practice of individuals seeking more suitable health and medical services abroad or in other regions due to the excessive cost or inadequacy of local healthcare options. As an emerging form of medical consultation and treatment, it is not limited to severe conditions incurable domestically, such as cancer. Currently, cross-border healthcare is gaining increasing recognition and acceptance among Chinese citizens. With the contraction of the high-end client market, the outbound medical tourism sector has entered a phase of market segmentation. According to publicly available data from the Hurun Wealth Report, as of May 2015, there were approximately 3.14 million high-net-worth individuals in mainland China with assets exceeding RMB 6 million, while the middle-class population surpassed 11.97 million. This demographic shift has made overseas medical treatment, health check-ups, and cosmetic procedures increasingly popular consumption choices for the middle class. This group is upgrading their consumption patterns to enhance their medical service experience and improve the quality of care received.
