As a scientist, he is a member of the National Academy of Medicine (USA), named “Clinician of the Century” by Thomson Reuters, has published more than 1,100 highly cited papers with 165,000 citations, and ranks among the top ten in citation impact in the pharmaceutical and medical fields.

His research interests are primarily focused on reshaping personalized medicine through genomics and digital health technologies. Prior to leading STSI in 2007, he oversaw a $33 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and served as Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic for 14 consecutive years, during which he led the department to become the number one heart center in the United States. He also founded the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine.
