Capsule Files IPO Prospectus: The 'Uber for Medications' Revolutionizing Pharmacy Delivery

Capsule is a New York-based startup pharmaceutical company, often referred to as the “Uber of prescription drugs.” It allows you to purchase medications without visiting pharmacies such as Walgreens or CVS, as Capsule delivers them directly to your office or home.

The "Uber" of Pharmaceuticals

Typically, physicians in U.S. hospitals are responsible only for conducting physical examinations and prescribing medications based on symptoms. After their hospital visit, patients fill their prescriptions at pharmacies. However, visiting a pharmacy is often far from an enjoyable experience; at times, after waiting in long queues, patients discover that the required medication is out of stock. Capsule helps streamline the medication procurement process, saving patients valuable time.

You can view your prescription details in the Capsule app, including costs and daily dosage instructions. You can then add the medication to your cart and select the delivery date, time, and address. Choose a two-hour delivery window and your preferred payment method. Full-time pharmacists and couriers will deliver your medication to your specified address. Additionally, your insurance information is automatically displayed in the Capsule app; if it does not appear, you can simply take a photo of your insurance card. Currently, Capsule has only one location in New York, but it delivers throughout New York City, excluding Staten Island.

Capsule may offer over-the-counter medications, but currently it only delivers prescription drugs prescribed by physicians. If you have any questions, you can consult with a pharmacist through the app at any time; all pharmacists on Capsule are rigorously selected. In addition, Capsule has obtained a veterinary drug license.

In addition, Capsule has also redesigned the appearance of its pill bottles and labels. The font on each bottle is larger, the medication instructions are clearer, and the bottles are sealed in brown bags.

The founder was once a pharmacist.

Capsule was co-founded by Sonia Patel and Eric Kinariwala. Sonia was formerly a pharmacy manager, while Eric was previously an asset analyst. Sonia Patel earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Texas at Austin at the age of 23. While it typically takes eight years for most pharmacists to complete their training, Sonia accomplished this in just six years.

Eric was previously a technology investor. After having a very poor experience at a pharmacy, he began to consider how to design a better process for purchasing medications, such as placing orders via mobile phone and delivering them directly to customers’ homes.
