Solera Health Secures $4 Million in Additional Funding to Expand Diabetes Prevention Platform

Jun 21, 2016 11:32 CST Updated 11:32

Solera Health, headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, has secured an additional $4 million in Series A funding, as reported by MobiHealth News. The company previously raised $3 million in Series A funding in November 2015, bringing its total funding to $7 million. Solera Health’s primary investors include BlueCross BlueShield Venture Partners, Sandbox Industries, and SJF Ventures, with the first two participating in both of the company’s funding rounds. This successful financing will help Solera Health better connect providers, payers, and patients on a unified platform for diabetes prevention and management.

Solera Health provides a platform serving patients, providers, and other stakeholders, with the aim of facilitating broader access to the benefits of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). The company’s technology enables better integration with the DPP, helping clients manage payment and reimbursement processes, thereby incentivizing all stakeholders to participate in disease prevention programs.

Currently, diabetes and diabetes prevention programs are the company’s primary focus, while it has also indicated that the platform will expand into other similar areas in the future. According to The Wall Street Journal, depression and hypertension are both potential target markets for the company in the future.

The Number of Diabetic Patients in the United States Reaches 86 Million

Achieving chronic disease prevention requires innovative patient management approaches to creatively address challenges in program implementation, patient enrollment and coverage, reporting, and reimbursement. According to estimates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 86 million adults in the United States have diabetes and are not taking any preventive measures. Among these individuals, 15%–30% will develop type 2 diabetes within five years.

Solera Health’s clinical platform connects 86 million Americans at high risk for type 2 diabetes through more than 850 CDC-recognized National Diabetes Prevention Programs, helping them adopt healthier lifestyles and reduce the risk of disease progression.

Diabetes Prevention Program

The Diabetes Prevention Program is a multi-center collaborative clinical research initiative designed to investigate whether type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed through lifestyle modifications, including moderate weight loss via dietary changes and increased physical activity, as well as the oral antidiabetic medication metformin.

The Diabetes Prevention Program has successfully spun off a digital health company—Omada Health. To date, the company has raised $77.5 million, focusing primarily on the development of remote delivery technologies. Omada’s flagship program, named “Prevent,” is a 16-week initiative designed to encourage individuals at high risk for type 2 diabetes to engage in more health-promoting activities. Each participant is paired with a dedicated health coach who monitors progress throughout the program. Additionally, the program delivers health education and facilitates user engagement via mobile and computer platforms.
