In the blink of an eye, half of 2016 has already passed. As the saying goes, “Heroes abound like endless waves; a new generation replaces the old.” With the market gradually stabilizing, a new landscape for mobile health apps has taken shape. VCBeat was fortunate to obtain the list of the Top 50 most-downloaded mobile health apps in the first half of 2016 from the “Medical Health Exhibition,” and we are eager to share it with our readers. Let us see who emerges as the standout talent in this ranking of mobile health applications.

Note: This ranking is compiled from data aggregated across multiple mainstream download channels, including the Android Market, Yingyongbao, Huawei Terminal, and 360 Download. The data cutoff date is May 24, 2016.

*Note: This ranking excludes health-related apps such as those for sports and fitness, focusing primarily on mobile medical apps in vertical sectors.

As revealed by the ranking, Meiyou Period Tracker claimed the top spot with over 290 million downloads, while Dayima followed closely behind with more than 240 million downloads. There are 11 apps in the female health and maternal/infant care sector, accounting for 22% of the total. Additionally, among the top 50 apps, 23 are comprehensive mobile healthcare products (offering appointment registration and online consultation), representing 46% of the total. Competition in this segment has become extremely intense. Chunyu Doctor holds a significant lead in downloads and is the only comprehensive mobile healthcare app within the top 50 to surpass 100 million downloads. Ping An Good Doctor and Kuaisu Wenzhenyi rank second and third in this category, respectively.

The High Popularity of Apps in the Female and Maternal & Infant Industries: VCBeat Attributes This to Two Main Factors. First, the implementation of China’s nationwide two-child policy has led to an annual increase of 3 million newborns, driving a surge in market demand for sectors such as infant and child education and maternal-infant support services. Second, there is a clear trend toward earlier onset of dysmenorrhea among women, and data from the National Bureau of Statistics’ female population survey indicates that the female population continues to grow. Consequently, female users’ demand for using apps to manage their physiological health is expected to rise significantly.

Demand for comprehensive mobile health platforms such as Chunyu Yisheng and Ping An Good Doctor is expected to continue growing over a certain period. According to monitoring data from Analysys Easyview Think Tank, the market size of China’s mobile healthcare industry will reach RMB 4.88 billion in 2015, representing a 62% increase compared with 2014. The market size is projected to approach RMB 30 billion by 2018, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) exceeding 60% from 2016 to 2018.

In addition, eight pharmaceutical apps made the list, representing a market worth hundreds of billions of yuan, with only 1 Yao Wang successfully breaking into the top ten. Since its sales first exceeded RMB 100 million last August, 1 Yao Wang has further solidified its position as the leading player in pharmaceutical e-commerce. In December last year, “Fangkuai 1,” its B2B online pharmaceutical wholesale platform, was officially launched, forming, together with 1 Yao Wang and 1 Zhen, the “three pillars” of the Internet-plus-pharmaceutical healthcare ecosystem. It is expected that the integration of pharmaceutical e-commerce (To C and To B) with online diagnosis and treatment, covering multiple segments of the pharmaceutical industry chain, will become an industry trend.
