Headquartered in San Diego, Reflexion Health has integrated its developed physical therapy training programs with Microsoft’s Kinect motion-sensing gaming device. Leveraging the Windows operating system, it enables users to undergo physical therapy in a game-like manner. This approach transforms traditional medical treatment models by providing meaningful, patient-centered care.

According to MobiHealth News, the company recently secured $18 million in Series B financing, with specific investors yet to be disclosed. Previously, Reflexion raised $4.25 million in seed funding in October 2012 and $7.5 million in Series A financing in March 2014, with both rounds led by West Health Investment Fund. These three successful fundraising rounds have brought the company’s total capital raised to nearly $30 million.

The company stated that the newly raised funds will be primarily allocated to three areas: further refining its product, Vera, to maximize its clinical value; expanding its digital health product portfolio; and penetrating the U.S. healthcare system to broaden its market reach. Currently, Vera has obtained FDA marketing authorization.

“We are delighted to have received FDA clearance as a member of the digital health community, authorizing us to serve users through innovative products and approaches like Vera. Vera enables deeper and more efficient interactions with patients. We will continue to explore Vera’s significant positive impact on both patients and physicians, allowing more users to benefit from it,” said Joe Smith, CEO of Reflexion.

Vera, a product developed by Reflexion, engages in interactive communication with patients and incorporates entertainment elements into physical therapy training sessions. The aim is to enhance patient stickiness to the product and improve loyalty. Vera provides patients with video guidance and exergames for physical exercises, replacing the previous image-based movement tutorials.

Vera leverages the advanced depth-sensing and body-tracking capabilities of the latest Kinect sensors to capture patients’ exercise movements, compare them against correct movement models, and provide guidance as needed. This approach makes rehabilitation exercises more accessible for patients compared to traditional diagram-based systems. Patient movement data can also be shared with therapists, enabling them to prescribe tailored regimens and monitor patient progress.
