FareWell, headquartered in San Francisco, develops products aimed at preventing chronic diseases by addressing obesity. According to MobiHealth News, the company recently raised $8.5 million in financing. This marks FareWell’s first round of funding, with investors consisting primarily of individual angels, including Chairman and Co-founder David Perry.
“When my father was 44, I watched him struggle through his first heart attack, followed by several cardiac surgeries, but he ultimately did not survive. That experience was a wake-up call for me, making me realize that health is what matters most. Since then, I have meticulously planned my diet to manage various risk factors for heart disease, achieving excellent results. This inspired me to help more people adopt healthier lifestyles—not just for weight loss, but to improve their overall well-being.” This is how Perry explained the original intention behind founding FareWell, with the company’s mission being to promote better health for all.

FareWell’s product portfolio includes digital tools, health coaches, and dietary plans, all of which encourage users to adopt healthy eating habits, with a particular emphasis on plant-based foods. Users engage in real-time interactions with their health coaches via video or voice calls every two weeks, facilitating in-depth discussions about their health status and any changes. Additionally, users are provided with a smart scale for regular weight monitoring, with the data synced to both the user’s and the health coach’s devices.
A Balanced Diet Is the Key to Health
At the core of the project is a dietary plan designed by Chief Health Officer Mark Berman, with advisory support from David Eisenberg of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Mark Erickson of the American Culinary Federation, and Joanne Young, Provost and Chef Trainer at FareWell. Through the company’s proprietary app, users can access video cooking tutorials, shopping lists, and other educational content related to culinary science. FareWell aims to enhance user engagement and loyalty by incorporating gamification elements such as phased goals, SMS reminders, and rewards.
“We already know that dieting is ineffective. Meanwhile, experts have reached a clear consensus on what constitutes a healthy lifestyle. A balanced diet, particularly one rich in vegetables, is the optimal approach to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, which can even prevent and reverse the progression of chronic diseases. FareWell has built a platform that provides users with validated clinical weight management experience, helping them achieve behavioral improvements and lead healthier lives at a lower cost,” said Berman.

Launch a 200-Person Project
In addition to this financing round, FareWell also announced a project plan involving 200 participants. “These 200 participants will be divided into multiple smaller teams. To ensure the safety of team members and mitigate risks, they will undergo blood testing,” said Appelbaum, CEO and co-founder.
“This project will help us validate the feasibility of our approach and collect comprehensive data on product efficacy, thereby assisting individuals with obesity by motivating them to adopt healthier eating habits for weight loss. Furthermore, the initiative aims to modify behavioral patterns, foster new habits conducive to weight reduction, enhance food-related awareness, and reduce the risk of disease,” Appelbaum wrote in a blog post.
