Beijing Leads Nation in Innovative Medical Device Approvals with Strong AI and Robotics Pipeline

Recently, the 2026 “Vital China Research Tour” Beijing-themed media tour visited the Beijing Changping International Medical Device City, hailed as Beijing’s “Medical Device Silicon Valley.”

As people age, the functional decline of cardiac valves is inevitable. Artificial biological valves can “extend the lifespan” of aging hearts. “Currently, our team uses bovine pericardium to replace the mechanical valves previously employed, enabling better integration of the artificial valves with the human body and ensuring stable performance.”

He stated that the company was established in Changping District in 2001, when the Medical Device City had not yet begun construction. “We have witnessed the development of the ‘Medical Device Silicon Valley’ and have also benefited from various support policies implemented by Changping District. Currently, the company has obtained market approval for 24 Class III medical device products, 50% of which fill gaps in the domestic market.”

Including Balance Medical, Changping District is home to over 500 medical device companies and has become one of the key clusters for the city’s healthcare industry. TowardPi launched the world’s first intelligent surgical microscope with intraoperative real-time 3D OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) navigation capabilities; PINS Medical developed a new generation of deep brain stimulators capable of autonomous adjustment based on neural signals; AK Medical established the largest 3D printing workshop in the Asia-Pacific region within the orthopedic 3D printing sector... Over the past three years, the output value of the district’s medical device industry has accounted for more than one-third of the city’s total.

Municipal Science and Technology Commission,ZhongguancunDu Xiaojing, Deputy Director of the Pharmaceutical Division of the Administrative Committee, introduced that since 2024, Beijing has consecutively issued measures for three years to support the high-quality development of innovative pharmaceuticals. The latest initiatives launched in 2026 build upon previous efforts by placing greater emphasis on original innovation, focusing on frontier areas such as AI-based prediction and brain-computer interfaces, and encouraging companies and research institutions to prioritize forward-looking research and innovation.
