To study and implement General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important directive at the National Health and Wellness Conference that “without universal health, there can be no comprehensive well-being,” Dr. Jiang Hezuo, President of Wangfu Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine (and former President of the Rocket Force General Hospital), delivered an enthusiastic address. He first extended his congratulations on the establishment of the “Center for Precision Diagnosis and Treatment with Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine,” and expressed sincere gratitude to the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and all the distinguished leaders present for their care and support in the development of discipline construction at Wangfu Hospital. He pointed out that President Xi’s important directive reflects the concern of Party and state leaders for the health of the Chinese people, as well as the determination of the CPC Central Committee to keep the people in mind, prioritize healthcare, and safeguard public health. In recent years, Wangfu Hospital has carried out extensive exploratory work in the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine, particularly in the field of precision medicine. Taking this conference as an opportunity, Wangfu Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine will fully embrace new concepts, continuously explore innovative pathways, and promote the development and construction of the discipline of precision medicine.

Liu Yan, Director of the Center for Precision Diagnosis and Treatment Integrating Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine (an academic inheritor of nationally renowned veteran TCM practitioners), delivered a speech from the perspective of whole-industry-chain exploration of precision medicine integrating traditional Chinese and Western medicine in clinical oncology. She provided insights into Hongyitang Physician Group’s distinctive approaches to integrative oncology across the following areas: genetic testing, TCM diagnostics, therapeutic modalities, postoperative care, physical therapy, and management of metastasis and recurrence.

In addition, she introduced the product types, functional services, market positioning model, and progress of certain projects of the Hongyitang Physician Group. She stated that Hongyitang Physician Group focuses on the research and development and clinical application of patented anti-tumor drugs and novel biomedical materials. It aims to facilitate the transformation of key pharmaceutical patent achievements, establish an integrated industry-academia-research operational platform, and build a promotional base for clinical medical consortia, while committing to the development of high-performance, cost-effective cutting-edge biological anti-cancer products. Centered on the translation of patented traditional Chinese and Western medicine formulations for oncology and the R&D translation of new biomedical materials, and complemented by pharmaceutical and medical device trading as well as the commercialization of scientific and technological achievements, its four major business systems are designed to substantially enhance the diagnostic and therapeutic efficacy of precision medicine integrating traditional Chinese and Western medicine in clinical oncology.

Shi Guohua, Deputy Secretary-General of the Medical Science and Technology Promotion Working Committee of the China Association for Pharmaceutical Education, discussed the topic of integrating traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with Western medicine in the context of precision diagnosis and treatment trends. He elaborated on the advantages and strategies of combining TCM and Western medicine within the framework of precision medicine, tracing the development history of this field. He pointed out that China first proposed the concept of "precision surgery" in 2006, which was subsequently applied to medical fields such as tumor radiotherapy and gynecology. The foundation of precision medicine lies in accurate scientific diagnosis, precise description of pathogenesis, accurate assessment of disease progression, and the meticulous formulation and adjustment of treatment plans. By leveraging technologies such as genetic testing for data analysis and precisely evaluating therapeutic efficacy, precision medicine aims to achieve targeted drug use and precise treatment.

Cancer is a systemic disease with localized manifestations. Through syndrome differentiation and treatment, as well as targeted therapeutic interventions, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can help patients achieve maximal recovery. This approach not only mitigates the toxic side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, addresses challenges associated with advanced-stage, refractory, recurrent, and metastatic tumors, but also effectively improves survival rates for various cancers. Precision health management represents a new model guided by genetic testing and the TCM principle of "preventive treatment of disease." This health management philosophy, which integrates Eastern practical wellness practices with Western experimental medicine, will play an increasingly significant role in future clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Shi Guohua, Deputy Secretary-General of the Medical Science and Technology Promotion Working Committee of the China Medical Education Association, delivered a speech at the conference.

On the path to exploring precision clinical medication, Liu Lihong, Assistant to the President of Chaoyang Hospital, shared some of the work undertaken in this area over the past year or so. She stated that medications are the weapons of treatment in the therapeutic process. Both in China and the United States, continuous efforts are being made to pioneer the future development of precision medicine. In hospital operations, pharmaceuticals constitute a major cost component. Past explorations and summaries have revealed that when drugs are viewed from the perspective of revenue and cost, we adopt a more prudent approach to assessing their role in treatment and refining diagnostic plans for pharmacotherapy. This enables us to maximize rational drug use and achieve precision medicine.

Signing Ceremony for Five Major Physician Groups

At this conference, in addition to the five major physician groups signing strategic cooperation agreements, Yixing Physician Group and the Medical Investment Department of the Commercial Network Center under the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) also entered into a strategic partnership. Under this agreement, experts from Yixing Physician Group will be stationed at hospitals affiliated with or collaborating with the SASAC Commercial Network Center’s Medical Investment Department to conduct clinical research, diagnosis, and treatment, while the Medical Investment Department will assume full responsibility for the deployment of relevant medical equipment.

“Without universal health, there can be no comprehensive moderate prosperity.” Integrating traditional Chinese and Western medicine in the precise clinical diagnosis and treatment of tumors not only improves therapeutic efficacy but also fully implements the objectives of China’s “Big Health” system construction in disease prevention and precision health management, gradually establishing safe, high-quality, and efficient medical services.
