Zhangshang Tangyi Launches 'Tang+ 2.0' on Tmall, Ushering Diabetic Patients into a New Era of 'Data + Service'

Recently, Alibaba Health, Bayer Ascensia, and Zhangshang Tangyi have joined forces to launch the “Smart Care Initiative” (hereinafter referred to as the “Smart Care Plan”). Effective immediately, the initiative will provide Chinese patients with diabetes a bundled offering of “intelligent data collection + professional blood glucose management services.”

It is reported that the initiative will cover tens of millions of users of Tmall Pharmacy, helping Tmall users—especially those with diabetes—to collect health (blood glucose) data more easily and conveniently, thereby gaining access to highly precise, comprehensive, and personalized disease management and services.

The "Report on the Nutritional and Chronic Disease Status of Chinese Residents (2015)," recently released by the National Health and Family Planning Commission, shows that in 2012, there were approximately 100 million adult diabetes patients aged 18 and above in China. This means that nearly one in ten adults in China is a diabetes patient. The special survey on diabetes under the Chinese Chronic Disease Surveillance points out that among diabetes patients who have received drug treatment, less than half have their blood sugar levels under control. If diabetes patients lack effective health management, they are prone to developing various complications, which can endanger their physical health and even their lives.

It is understood that the “Smart Love Initiative” has launched a new “data + services” model, aiming to provide professional health management services for diabetic patients who lack long-term, professional blood glucose management. In addition to receiving professional blood glucose monitoring devices, patients will also pay for intelligent data collection and blood glucose health management services.

After each blood glucose test, the patient’s data is automatically uploaded to the cloud via the intelligent connectivity module, “Tang+.” Subsequent data analysis generates a personalized continuous glucose trend report, enabling physicians and dietitians to comprehensively assess the patient’s latest health status and adjust treatment plans for effective intervention. Ms. Zuo Yinghui, Vice President of Services at Zhangshang Tangyi, told reporters that diabetes management is a long-term process. Long-term management and services based on real-time data can significantly improve patients’ health outcomes, while intelligent acquisition of user data establishes the data foundation for a “closed-loop service” model.

At the flagship store on Tmall Medicine, reporters located this service bundle. In addition to the traditional combination of a blood glucose meter, test strips, and lancets, this blood glucose monitoring product also includes value-added services for blood glucose management provided by Zhangshang Tangyi (Pocket Sugar Doctor). This means that, beyond the physical products, patients receive a personalized health management plan tailored to their individual conditions. Furthermore, whenever any health abnormalities occur, patients will receive real-time alerts from Zhangshang Tangyi physicians or nutritionists, among other services.

As the incidence of chronic diseases rises in China, chronic disease management has become a key focus for pharmaceutical manufacturers, service providers, and major healthcare institutions both domestically and internationally. However, traditional high-precision blood glucose meters lack intelligent data transmission capabilities, leaving the service loop without adequate data support. “Zhangshang Tangyi’s ‘Tang+ 2.0’ is the only connectivity module on the market that can interface with mainstream blood glucose meters and enable their intelligent functionality. This is a major reason why Ali Health and Bayer chose to partner with Zhangshang Tangyi,” said Ms. Zhang Yuqin, Chief Medical Officer at Zhangshang Tangyi, when discussing the collaboration. “With massive volumes of continuous patient health data as the foundation, the professional physician services built by Zhangshang Tangyi hold significant potential and can truly benefit the tens of millions of users on the Tmall Pharmacy platform.”
