Among smart medical hardware devices, Kangkang Blood Pressure Monitor is fortunate.
According to VCBeat (WeChat: vcbeat), Kangkang Blood Pressure has secured four rounds of financing over the three consecutive years since its inception, with cumulative funding reaching nearly RMB 100 million.
Each new product launch has secured financing. For instance, after its online debut in August 2013, the company received RMB 4 million in angel investment in September; following the release of its first-generation smart blood pressure monitor in November, it secured RMB 30 million in Pre-A round funding.
This morning, Zeng Mingfa, co-founder of Kangkang Blood Pressure, confirmed to VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) that Yiling Health City Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Yiling Pharmaceutical, subscribed to RMB 3.125 million of Beijing Kangkang Shengshi Information Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Kangkang Blood Pressure”) for RMB 30 million, with the remaining investment amount credited to Kangkang Shengshi’s capital reserve, accounting for 20% of Kangkang Shengshi’s registered capital after the capital increase.
In fact, countless entrepreneurs have crossed over from the smart hardware sector into the medical field. Why has Kangkang Blood Pressure Management repeatedly attracted venture capital investment?
Everyone says that building a successful wearable device is akin to competing in a triathlon, requiring excellence in hardware, software, and services—not to mention the added challenge of entering the highly specialized healthcare industry.
Relying solely on the sale of smart blood pressure monitors for profitability is insufficient to penetrate the medical device market. Although many wearable products on the market are marketed under the guise of fashion with flashy features, they offer limited health value. Metrics such as step counting or exercise tracking are not core health indicators.
In Zeng Mingfa’s view, only health data such as blood pressure, blood glucose, and electrocardiogram (ECG) hold medical value. Conventional blood pressure monitors provide single-point measurements; however, for users, such single readings are insufficiently precise because blood pressure is dynamic, fluctuating between higher and lower levels.
Therefore, when the Kangkang blood pressure product was initially developed, it was designed as a wearable 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor. Continuous monitoring helps identify blood pressure sensitivity points, and alerts can be triggered in case of abnormalities. The entire device weighs only 120 grams, ensuring minimal impact on daily life.
Additionally, the device features a built-in 3G module that transmits data to the cloud. After big data analysis in the cloud, the results are fed back to the mobile app, enabling blood pressure monitoring and management via WeChat IPP.
Moreover, the Kangkang blood pressure monitor is highly competitive in price, costing only about 1% of similar 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitors. “We have partnerships with both Mobile QQ and WeChat users, making us the only smart hardware provider to collaborate with these platforms globally.”
Kangkang Mobile Smart Blood Pressure Monitor strips away the complexity of smart software, focusing on a one-touch design. Its understated and minimalist aesthetic highlights the product’s elegant simplicity. Leveraging next-generation medical measurement technology and backed by internationally recognized certifications, it delivers precise and reliable results. The device monitors blood pressure parameters outside clinical settings, in natural living conditions, recording and assessing daily activities and disease progression for patients with chronic conditions.
Zeng Mingfa has embarked on another strategic initiative: the Kangkang Chronic Disease Internet Hospital.
Patients schedule appointments via the app, undergo confirmation before consultation, and then receive prescriptions from the internet hospital, enabling them to purchase medications and access follow-up services. “Kangkang Chronic Disease Internet Hospital differs from other internet hospitals. We do not accept first-time visitors; instead, we provide online secondary consultations for chronic diseases,” Zeng Mingfa told reporters.
Currently, the Kangkang Chronic Disease Internet Hospital is located in the Comprehensive Bonded Zone of Baiyun District, Guiyang City. Wholly funded and established by Kangkang Blood Pressure, it provides on-site and remote professional diagnosis, treatment, and multi-party consultations; conducts comprehensive health assessments for patients; facilitates continuous and effective health management; and enhances patients’ understanding of the hazards and knowledge related to chronic diseases.
Its implementation value includes:
1Achieve an effective reduction in hypertension-related complications, thereby reducing the disease burden.
Cost savings of approximately RMB 11.64 billion are projected to be achieved within ten years; on the other hand, targeted poverty alleviation: precise screening and diagnosis-and-treatment management at the individual level will reduce untreated cases and mitigate poverty caused by illness.
2In addition to reducing the societal disease burden, chronic disease management based on internet hospitals can significantly lower the incidence of disability and mortality due to illness, thereby facilitating targeted poverty alleviation.
By breaking down the barriers between in-hospital diagnosis and treatment and out-of-hospital management, we effectively guide tiered diagnosis and treatment and optimize the use of medical resources. Meanwhile, we accumulate big data on the health and medical care of Guiyang residents to achieve authentic and dynamic data flows. Through continuous monitoring and management, we reduce the incidence of complications by 60% and achieve cumulative savings of RMB 7.6 billion in the social burden of disease within ten years.
3Proactive and active screening and management can significantly reduce the disease burden associated with chronic diseases.
Taking hypertension as an example: proactive intervention can reduce the incidence of complications from 25% to 5%, achieving a cumulative net benefit of approximately RMB 11.64 billion over ten years (based on a population of 4 million). If this model is scaled up to a provincial level or nationwide, it will drive economic benefits ranging from tens of billions to trillions of yuan.
It serves as a valuable exploratory pathway for implementing policies proposed by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council regarding tiered diagnosis and treatment, healthcare reform, medical insurance cost containment, and health big data, thereby contributing to the national strategy of big data and comprehensive health.
Kangkang’s ambulatory blood pressure monitor, hypertension services, chronic disease internet hospital, and hypertension insurance form an innovative model that creates a closed-loop “Internet + Hypertension” ecosystem. In Zeng Mingfa’s view, achieving a win-win outcome for all stakeholders is, from another perspective, equivalent to building a hypertension ecosystem. Leveraging Kangkang’s smart blood pressure hardware as the entry point and its chronic disease internet hospital as the operational platform, the company has continuously explored and gradually established a comprehensive management process for hypertension and other chronic diseases. This end-to-end workflow encompasses health education and prevention, monitoring with big data analytics, evaluation of pharmaceutical efficacy, chronic disease management via the internet hospital, and financial insurance solutions.
It is understood that Kangkang Blood Pressure has a team of approximately 50 members, with one-quarter being technical personnel responsible for software and smart hardware development. Despite its size, it is a highly efficient team. In April this year, Kangkang Blood Pressure partnered with ZhongAn Insurance, China’s first internet insurance company, to launch the country’s first hypertension-specific insurance product—Hypertension Stroke Complications Insurance. This collaboration established an integrated model combining “smart hardware + blood pressure management + financial insurance.”
Zeng Mingfa also informed reporters that Kangkang became one of the first partner organizations in the “Searching for China’s New Healthcare Insurance Policies” campaign jointly launched by Taikang Online and VCBeat, with both parties committed to co-building a new ecosystem integrating internet insurance and internet healthcare. Leveraging the mature collaboration model established with ZhongAn Insurance, along with support from pharmaceutical companies, the product is expected to launch soon.
Truly prioritizing users’ health needs and making user experience the highest priority, we will provide more affordable and secure chronic disease management solutions for patients with hypertension, delivering genuinely valuable services to support the healthy and happy lives of our users.
