This June, Chunyu Yisheng was reported to have completed a RMB 1.2 billion Pre-IPO financing round. In 2015, its online consultation business generated actual revenue of RMB 130 million and a profit of RMB 30 million, prompting plans to spin off and list the unit separately. Regrettably, at this critical juncture, Zhang Rui collapsed on the path to going public, a loss that is deeply lamentable.

Particularly during the Series B round in 2012, the two most grueling months saw him frequently suffering from insomnia, sending emails at two or three in the morning to discuss product design or business models. Early the next morning, he would rush to various investor meetings, passionately articulating the commercial value of Spring Rain. He had to deliver the same pitch at least twice a day and field all sorts of irrelevant questions.

“I am indeed very anxious,” he said. He struggled with poor appetite and sleepless nights, worrying before bed about what would happen if his cash flow broke down. In the morning, he would rally himself by saying that his product had alleviated the suffering of so many people and was so valuable that funding was sure to come—it was simply a matter of “timing not being right.” The mental stress soon manifested physically; the most noticeable change was that his temples had turned completely white. His father, a physician with many years of experience, told him this was due to autonomic nervous system dysfunction.
