Iora Health Recently Secured $75 Million in Series D FinancingIora Health, a primary care service provider, recently secured $75 million in Series D financing. The round was led by Temasek, the Singaporean investment company, with participation from 406 Ventures, Flare Capital Partners, F-Prime Capital, GE Ventures, Khosla Ventures, Polaris Partners, and Rice Management Company. Currently, Iora operates 34 primary care clinics across 11 states in the U.S. The newly raised funds will be used to further expand its market presence and increase investment in Chirp, the company’s collaborative IT platform. To date, Iora Health’s total funding has reached $123.5 million, indicating growing market attention toward emerging models in primary care.

Iora Health was founded in 2011 with the aim of helping middle-class patients manage their health information and connect them with a broader range of medical options and providers for their consideration. Co-founder Rushika Fernandopulle, an MD, along with Christopher McKown, sought to transform the way people access primary care. Since its inception, Iora has revamped the primary healthcare delivery system from three key aspects.
Iora Health’s clinics do not adopt the traditional fee-for-service model. They do not accept self-pay patients; instead, all their patients come from partner insurance plans and self-insured employers, who are required to pay a fixed monthly health plan fee per member. This model enables the company to seamlessly obtain prior authorizations and process payments. As a result, Iora Health can reduce administrative costs and empower its care teams with significant autonomy, allowing them to allocate resources flexibly based on patients’ clinical needs. This approach ensures improved patient health outcomes and satisfaction.
Iora Health’s service model effectively leverages electronic health record (EHR) systems to capture comprehensive patient data. It helps many patients address specific health issues. Through its data system, Iora can identify how many patients are not adequately managing their diabetes, enabling patient stratification. Subsequently, Iora reaches out to these patients to ensure proper management of their specific conditions and improve their health outcomes. Following the financing round, a portion of the funds will be allocated to upgrading and enhancing its healthcare information technology systems.
Another innovation by Iora Health is empowering patients to play an active role within their care teams, with the aim of rehumanizing healthcare. In addition to employing physicians, nurses, and behavioral health specialists, the company engages numerous health coaches. These individuals come from diverse backgrounds but excel at building strong interpersonal relationships with their patients.
It can be said that, to some extent, Iora Health has fundamentally transformed the operational model of traditional primary care clinics, particularly by revolutionizing the paradigm of patient care. The standard staffing configuration at an Iora Health clinic includes two physicians, one nurse, one social worker, and a team of health coaches comprising no fewer than five members. Additionally, they leverage external support from dietitians and behavioral change coaches. Upon arriving at the clinic, patients are first greeted by a health coach, who escorts them to an examination room to discuss the agenda for the current visit and follow up on progress since the previous appointment. The health coach then briefly confers with the physician, who subsequently evaluates the patient and provides corresponding recommendations. Notably, physicians at Iora Health clinics do not wear white coats.
After the consultation, health coaches email patients with all medical recommendations and suggestions for health improvement. Patients are encouraged to contact their doctors and health coaches at any time after leaving the clinic via phone, email, or video chat. What surprises patients most is that their appointment times are not limited to 15 minutes; they can even stay at the clinic for the entire day. The clinic offers fitness classes at various times, including yoga, aerobics, meditation, and more.
Iora Health CEO Rushika Fernandopulle stated that Temasek’s investment came at a critical juncture, as the company was undergoing a transformation and urgently required capital to support its expansion. A former physician himself, Fernandopulle has been dedicated to transforming the primary care sector, with the company’s mission being to improve population health and challenge and disrupt the healthcare industry’s established norms.
