As one of the livelihood issues of greatest concern to the general public, healthcare has always been a key focus of the State Council’s work deployments. On December 10–11, 2016, an important conference titled “The 2nd China Internet Healthcare Conference 2016 & Healthy China Tour – Peking Union Medical College Hospital Grand Lecture Hall Annual Meeting” will be grandly held in Beijing.

At that time, renowned experts, scholars, medical professionals, and healthcare industry practitioners from both China and abroad will gather in the capital to study the strategic guidelines of “Internet + Healthcare,” exchange insights on the practical applications of the internet in the medical field, and contribute to the early realization of the grand vision of “Healthy China.”

In the communique of the Fifth Plenary Session of the 18th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, “Healthy China” was proposed for the first time as a national strategy. In January 2016, the National Health and Family Planning Commission fully launched the preparation of the “Healthy China Construction Plan (2016–2020).” The Outline of Healthy China 2030, the 13th Five-Year Plan for Health and Wellness, and the Plan for Deepening the Reform of the Medical and Healthcare System were also being formulated intensively. The year 2016 would become a pivotal year for making significant strides in the “Healthy China” strategy, presenting rapid development opportunities for related industries and companies in the medical and healthcare sector.

Meanwhile, since Premier Li Keqiang first introduced the concept of “Internet Plus” in the Government Work Report in March 2015, this concept has provided new perspectives for the development of various industries, including finance, media, and services. In the healthcare sector, which features an extensive industrial chain and is vital to public welfare, issues such as uneven distribution of medical resources, low quality of primary care services, strained doctor-patient relationships, and difficulties and high costs associated with accessing medical care have long been focal points of social concern. In light of these challenges, healthcare professionals need to engage in in-depth discussions and active practices to explore how the “Internet Plus” approach can help the traditionally conservative and burdensome healthcare industry overcome these obstacles, make medical access more convenient for patients, alleviate physicians’ workload pressures, and improve the quality of primary healthcare services.

At the “First China Internet Healthcare Conference” held in November 2015, healthcare professionals explored the development direction of “Internet + Healthcare” around the conference theme of “Integration, Innovation, Interconnectivity and Interoperability.” The lively discussions and extensive exchanges during the event laid a solid foundation for the upcoming Second Internet Healthcare Conference.

The “2016 Second China Internet Healthcare Conference and Healthy China Tour – Peking Union Medical College Hospital Lecture Hall Annual Meeting,” held in Beijing on December 10–11, 2016, will focus on the theme of “Smart Interconnected Development and Innovative Technology Application.” The conference will primarily cover advanced medical technologies and topics such as hospital information system construction, medical big data, information network security, electronic medical records, wearable devices, telemedicine, and family physician services. Key discussions will center on strengthening the deep integration of internet and information technologies with healthcare institutions.

Leaders, experts, and scholars from health administrative authorities at all levels, medical institutions, associations, societies, and healthcare IT enterprises are invited to participate in discussions on the strategies and methodologies for the innovative development of “Internet + Healthcare,” and to provide in-depth interpretations of new applications in the “Internet +” healthcare sector. The initiative aims to leverage information technology to facilitate the establishment of a tiered diagnosis and treatment model, thereby further promoting the healthy development of the smart healthcare industry.

Under the guidance of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, hosted by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, and organized by the Health Science Popularization Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, we believe that the successful convening of this conference will continue to drive innovation in our healthcare sector, bringing about even more encouraging changes!
