Don't Miss the Optimal Intervention Window for Children

Autism is a relatively severe developmental disorder characterized primarily by impairments in social interaction, communication, and imagination. Language and communication deficits are particularly prominent in children with autism, with language impairment often being a hallmark manifestation. Phonological development in these children lags behind that of their neurotypical peers, and difficulties in syntactic structure, semantics, and pragmatic rules significantly hinder their interpersonal communication. Often, when these issues arise, parents do not attach sufficient importance to them, failing to initiate early intervention and rehabilitation. Parents tend to adopt a wait-and-see approach, believing that these problems may gradually resolve as the child grows older. However, in reality, missing the optimal window for intervention can severely impede the recovery of language and communication skills, as these abilities do not improve spontaneously and require targeted one-on-one therapeutic support. Failure on the part of parents to fully recognize these challenges can result in delayed intervention and missed critical opportunities for treatment.

Rehabilitation Should Be Scientific

The second aspect is the use of correct methods. Rehabilitation of language abilities cannot be achieved simply through early childhood education or attendance at kindergarten. Therefore, when dealing with children with autism or language disorders, it is essential to categorize their conditions and identify appropriate interventions. Children with autism require rehabilitation strategies specifically designed for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), while children with intellectual disabilities and language delays have their own tailored approaches. Although both simple language delay and autism present superficially as language impairments, intervention for children with isolated language delays is relatively more straightforward. We may employ various techniques to enhance their language comprehension, imitation skills, and articulation. In contrast, the core challenges for children with autism lie in communication barriers, as well as deficits in social and communicative abilities. Thus, intervention should focus on fostering proactive communication skills and building a willingness to engage in social interaction. Consequently, professional and specialized approaches are particularly crucial for autism. Accurately identifying the underlying issues and applying targeted treatments will significantly contribute to the child’s rehabilitation and improvement.

Currently, rehabilitation approaches for children with autism in China primarily rely on traditional, education-based interventions, with limited application of emerging technologies. Abroad, extensive research is being conducted on advanced technologies for autism rehabilitation, including genetic screening, cerebral bioelectricity, robotics, and artificial intelligence. These areas represent cutting-edge research but remain at a distance from widespread clinical implementation. In China, the main rehabilitation methods for children with autism include behavioral training and social skills training, which are relatively traditional in nature.

Family Cooperation Is Key

For children with autism, in addition to scientifically based rehabilitation methods provided by professional institutions, family involvement is equally critical. According to research by American scientists, language rehabilitation for children with autism requires intensive, high-intensity intervention totaling no less than 40 hours per week. However, the time children can spend at rehabilitation centers is limited, and therapists cannot provide continuous one-on-one instruction. Therefore, parental involvement is essential. Parents must collaborate closely with rehabilitation institutions to reinforce and consolidate skills at home using the same evidence-based techniques. Only through such coordinated efforts can optimal benefits be achieved for the child.

Currently, thanks to the widespread availability of the internet, parents can search online and compare symptoms to recognize potential issues in their children, thereby heightening their awareness. However, we still lack large-scale public education campaigns on autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Significant efforts are needed to help parents recognize early signs and ensure children receive timely intervention, thereby maximizing positive outcomes.

To further explore the development trends of technological innovation and translation in the healthcare industry, the China Association for Promotion of Rehabilitation Technology Translation and Development held the “2016 China Forum on the Development of Rehabilitation Technology Innovation Industry and the 3rd Member Representative Congress of the China Association for Promotion of Rehabilitation Technology Translation and Development” at the China National Convention Center in Beijing from November 5 to 6, 2016.

Centered on the theme of “Focusing on Healthy China, Promoting Innovative Industries,” this forum will uphold the conference’s mission of “learning, communication, discussion, and exchange.” It will delve into key issues such as fostering innovative development in medical and health industry technologies and strengthening the integration among industry, academia, research, and technology transfer. The forum will also interpret and discuss hot topics, policies and regulations, guiding principles, and development models related to the implementation of the national strategy of “Healthy China.”
