eMindful is a company that provides employers and individuals with mindfulness-based therapy (aOnline Mental Health Training Program), a company founded in 2003, recently secured $6.85 million in Series B financing led by LFE Capital, including $4 million in pure cash. In addition to the funding, Leslie Frecon, Managing Partner at LFE Capital, will join eMindful’s board of directors to help expand the company’s product offerings. Other investors include Fairground Capital and New Ground Ventures, with existing investors Bridge Builders Collaborative and One Earth Capital continuing their support. This round brings eMindful’s total fundraising to $11 million.

“This funding will be used to expand eMindful’s mobile platform, expand its international business, and develop other new initiatives,” said the company’s CEO, Kelley McCabe.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and mindfulness meditation have been highly popular in the West for some time. Notably, Steve Jobs, as a self-taught devotee of this Eastern tradition, played a not insignificant role in boosting its prominence.

Mindfulness techniques integrate their unique philosophical principles to help individuals calm a cluttered mind, focus more intently on the present moment, and let go of past events and future concerns. Many cognitive psychologists recommend this approach to patients for combating anxiety and depression; more broadly, it is regarded as an effective remedy for stress.

eMindful offers online, lecture-style courses on Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), which users can access and view on mobile devices such as smartphones or computers (also configurable via group settings). What sets it apart is that, in addition to listening to lectures online, participants can interact with instructors and fellow course members, asking questions in real time. The online course categories include stress management, metabolic health, weight loss, diabetes, smoking cessation, and the management of other chronic conditions. According to data from the official website, the success rates for stress reduction, reversal of metabolic syndrome, and smoking cessation are 29%, 55%, and 40%, respectively, with an average weekly online engagement time of 47 minutes per user.

“LFE is delighted to partner with Kelley and the eMindful team to take the business to a new level,” said Frecon, Managing Partner at LFE Capital, in a statement. “As mindfulness-based psychology (Editor’s note: a form of mental health therapy) gains widespread adoption, the quality and reliability of eMindful’s offerings are highly attractive to healthcare providers, payers, and individuals alike. eMindful will also recommend appropriate pricing packages.”

In August, the company was added to Humana’s insurance directory, providing employers with mindfulness-based mental health training programs. As more employers seek out wellness plans, eMindful is exploring innovative and engaging ways to encourage deeper and more active participant involvement. In the coming months, eMindful will launch a “1% Challenge,” encouraging participants to dedicate 1% of each workday (approximately 14 minutes) to mindfulness practice. If participants maintain this routine for 30 days, the company will donate online course credits and contribute to charitable funds.
