The “Chang Jiang Scholars Program” is a special high-level talent initiative jointly funded and established in 1998 by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and the Li Ka Shing Foundation (Hong Kong) to enhance the academic standing of Chinese higher education institutions and revitalize China’s higher education sector. The program comprises two components: the Distinguished Professor Chair System and the Chang Jiang Scholar Achievement Award. To implement the “National Outline for Medium- and Long-Term Education Reform and Development (2010–2020)” and the “National Outline for Medium- and Long-Term Talent Development Planning (2010–2020),” the Ministry of Education launched a new version of the “Chang Jiang Scholars Program” in 2011.
The “Changjiang Scholars Reward Program” is a key component of the national major talent initiative. Distinguished Professors are appointed for a term of five years, while Visiting Professors are appointed for a term of three years; both receive the Changjiang Scholar bonus during their appointment period. The bonus for Distinguished Professors is RMB 200,000 per person per year. The bonus for Visiting Professors is RMB 30,000 per person per month, paid according to actual working time.
