VCBeat News: Today, the intelligent cloud platform for diabetes management, Zhangkong Diabetes, officially announced that it has secured tens of millions of RMB in Series B financing. Additional investors are expected to inject further capital in the near future, bringing the total amount raised in this round to over RMB 100 million. This marks the third round of financing for Zhangkong Diabetes, following its angel round of RMB 15 million and Series A round of RMB 60 million.
"Mastering Diabetes" was launched in November 2013, introducing diabetes health management technologies and concepts from Vitalhealth, a company founded by Mayo Clinic. By intelligently analyzing and categorizing massive amounts of diabetes management cases, it has formed a three-dimensional management model centered on an intelligent engine, integrating "hardware + services + cloud platform," and has become a large-scale open cloud platform. By 2017, "Mastering Diabetes" had established diverse service models primarily based on its APP, web portal, WeChat, hotline, and offline service outlets.
Zhangkong Diabetes has partnered with over 100 leading hospitals across China and numerous renowned enterprises. Leveraging its intelligent, effective, and integrated online-to-offline diabetes management capabilities, it assists hospitals in establishing Diabetes Management Centers and provides patients with seamless treatment and management services both within and outside the hospital setting. Additionally, it offers diabetes management platforms and service support to companies such as Johnson & Johnson (USA), Air Liquide (France), Tencent Tang Daifu, and Sunshine Insurance, enabling them to build connections with users and deliver in-depth services.
“Zhangkong Diabetes has always placed great emphasis on research into clinical effectiveness,” Guo Gaoxing explained to VCBeat. Over the past five years (since the platform’s development began in 2012), Zhangkong Diabetes has pursued an unglamorous and arduous path, firmly believing that the essence of healthcare lies in “effectiveness,” and that such assessments must be made by authoritative medical institutions and professionals. Therefore, Zhangkong Diabetes has consistently focused on tackling the most challenging aspect: hospital-side engagement. It has built a service team of dozens to collaborate with hospitals in patient management, analyzing case data to refine management strategies and optimize its platform.
At the end of 2014, Zhangkong Tangniaobing became the exclusive partner for diabetes management apps in the "Effectiveness Evaluation of Mobile Health Applications for Diabetes" project initiated by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), conducting a validity study with 300 cases. In November of the following year, it published the "Report on the Effectiveness Evaluation of Mobile Health Applications for Diabetes."
The report indicates that the Zhangkong Diabetes platform, by facilitating weekly blood glucose monitoring, timely medication adherence as prescribed, reminders for regular diet and moderate exercise, patient health education, and interaction with physicians, significantly improves patients’ compliance with blood glucose monitoring, regular medication use, and effective exercise behaviors. It also aids in glycemic control among diabetic patients, proving to be a feasible and appropriate technology for diabetes management. A paper on this subject was published in April 2016 in the journal "China Digital Medicine." It is reported that Zhangkong Diabetes is undergoing certification by the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) and has already launched the second phase of its multi-center clinical certification process, with the expectation of becoming the first platform in this field to receive CFDA certification.
Guo Gaoxing pointed out, “The more hospitals and enterprises we serve, the more management cases we generate. By mining and analyzing these cases, we continuously optimize our platform capabilities to provide our partners with more refined and effective service support, ultimately improving the lives of more diabetes patients.”
Guo Gaoxing revealed that over 2,000 community hospitals and more than 100 Grade A tertiary hospitals are currently using the Tangningbang (Diabetes Control) platform, which manages millions of users. Following this round of investment, Tangningbang will increase R&D investment in artificial intelligence to support its big health data analytics; secondly, it will ramp up clinical trials for its mobile tools for chronic disease management; and finally, it will strengthen marketing efforts to establish management centers based on hospital platforms.
