Primary healthcare is emerging as a high-growth sector. This trend is driven, on one hand, by policy guidance and, on the other, by the large population base at the grassroots level, which has attracted significant attention from capital investors, medical institutions, and entrepreneurs.
In February 2017, VCBeat published a special report titled “Investment Opportunities in Primary Healthcare in 2017,” which reviewed 67 primary healthcare startups—including Yixuntong, Remote Vision, Mingyi Zhonghe, Yunnan Xinkang, Kuaiyi, Kangkang Blood Pressure, Micro-Nano Core, Community 580, Kangborui, and Hailiying—as well as 16 listed companies, featuring interviews and analytical surveys of these entities.
We have found that this group of startups, with total financing exceeding RMB 6 billion, and listed companies, with a market capitalization surpassing RMB 230 billion, have long been entrenched in the primary healthcare sector, which boasts a market size of up to RMB 500 billion.
According to the 2016 Statistical Yearbook of Health and Family Planning, there were 925,000 medical and health institutions nationwide in China, a figure 33 times that of hospitals. However, the average annual number of patient visits at primary care institutions was only 4,700, whereas hospitals handled 23 times as many. Primary care institutions currently account for a small proportion of total patient visits, indicating substantial untapped potential in medical service delivery.
Driven by strong policy support and the downward shift in demand, the successful implementation of these initiatives will unlock an incremental market space worth RMB 500 billion for the primary healthcare sector.
Therefore, we are confident that the major trend toward primary healthcare has arrived!
However, after numerous institutions entered the primary healthcare sector, they discovered that there were more problems than solutions and greater investments than returns...
Moreover, the deeper our research delves, the more problems we find that need to be addressed.
To this end, with the aim of deeply exploring the challenges facing primary healthcare and deconstructing the entrepreneurial opportunities within the RMB 500 billion primary care market,Eight researchers from VCBeat’s VBInsight spent nearly four months preparing and releasing China’s first “2017 White Paper on Innovation in Primary Healthcare.”

We aim to address ten key issues in primary healthcare:
1. Why is the primary healthcare industry poised for a "Golden Decade"? How to seize industrial opportunities?
2. Why is the optimal industry entry point to “empower” primary healthcare?
3. How to empower primary healthcare? What are the four key empowerment directions? And what are the critical points within each?
4. Which empowerment direction poses greater difficulty, and which offers the highest certainty of returns? What is the most rational development path?
5. What opportunities in the industrial chain does empowering primary healthcare bring?
6. What are the pitfalls and misconceptions that must not be overlooked in empowering primary healthcare?
7. Which companies are empowering primary healthcare? Who are the best practice case studies?
8. Should companies adopt a strategy of deep regional penetration or rapid market expansion when developing their primary healthcare business?
9. In terms of strategic direction, should we adopt full-chain empowerment or single-link empowerment?
10. What new opportunities will empowering primary healthcare bring to internet healthcare companies?
