Hainan Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, the sole national international medical tourism industrial park approved by the State Council in 2013, benefits from nine “golden preferential” policies. These include expedited import registration and approval for medical devices and pharmaceuticals, access permissions for medical technologies for clinical application and research, relaxed restrictions on the practice duration of foreign physicians, and allowance for foreign capital to establish medical institutions. As China’s first national-level development zone focused on international medical tourism services, low-carbon ecological communities, and the aggregation of international organizations, it has been hailed by Premier Li Keqiang as the “second movement” of the Boao Forum for Asia.
Since December 29, 2015, a total of 27 projects have commenced construction in the Hainan Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, with four already in trial operation and another 39 having passed technical evaluation.
In the future, this will be the sole hub for high-end international medical resources in China. High-end medical services that are currently difficult to access domestically—such as cancer prevention and treatment, cosmetic and plastic surgery, anti-aging therapies, and stem cell research—will soon be available on a one-stop basis at the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, eliminating the need to travel abroad.
The Pilot Zone not only provides a wide range of high-end medical services but will also enable access to novel and specialized foreign drugs for cancer treatment. In March last year, the Pilot Zone completed its first pharmaceutical import, bringing in pembrolizumab, a medication used to treat various types of cancer.
“Jianke.com is the first domestic pharmaceutical e-commerce enterprise to enter the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone. Establishing an international internet hospital here is not only the optimal strategic choice but also a move to seize the early-mover advantage in industry development,” said Xie Fangmin, CEO of Jianke.
Core businesses are assisted reproduction and oncology treatment.
The Jianke Hainan International Cloud Hospital project is jointly invested by Jianke and Kaixin Investment Group.Kaixin Capital was an investor in Jianke’s Series A financing round. In early last year, Jianke secured $100 million in Series A funding from Kaixin Capital. Subsequently, in May of this year, Jianke raised an additional $50 million in its Series A+ round from three institutional investors.
The Hainan International Cloud Hospital project is planned to cover an area of 180 mu and will be constructed in three phases, with the entire project expected to be completed by 2020.
The core business of the Jianke International Cloud Hospital project will focus on assisted reproduction, sports medicine, and chronic disease rehabilitation and treatment, including oncology care. Leveraging Jianke and Kaixin’s financial strength, expertise in internet technology application, pharmaceutical resource advantages, and experience in chronic disease management, the future hospital will integrate leading international medical resources from institutions such as Harvard University and Yale University. It aims to become a comprehensive, high-end international medical institution integrating clinical treatment, rehabilitation, and scientific research.
Xie Fangmin stated that within Jianke’s “Internet + Healthcare” big health industry chain, the core component is the creation of a smart health service platform. The international cloud hospital jointly established by Jianke and Kaixin will provide valuable exploratory experience for this initiative and, in the future, will serve as a key platform for Jianke to aggregate high-end medical resources from both domestic and overseas markets, facilitating the interconnectivity and exchange of pharmaceutical and medical resources between China and the rest of the world.
Jianke's Year of Comprehensive Expansion in Internet Healthcare
In March this year, Jianke.com’s first pilot project in internet healthcare was announced to be established at the Shejitai Hospital in Baiyun District, Guangzhou, officially sounding the horn for Jianke’s layout of a closed-loop health service ecosystem integrating “Internet + Hospital + Pharmaceuticals + Patients.”Subsequently, with the support of capital, Jianke’s expansion into physical hospitals reached a minor peak.
On June 14, Jianke acquired Wuhan Xiongchu Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine;
On June 22, Jianke Digital Hospital for Chronic Disease Management was established in Chongqing;
On June 29, Jianke International Cloud Hospital was established in Boao Lecheng, Hainan.
Jianke CEO Xie Fangmin stated, “For long-term development, internet healthcare must be integrated with physical hospitals. This year, Jianke will continue to expand its network of physical hospitals in China through self-construction or acquisitions, with a target of at least six facilities.”
“Assuming Jianke operates 100 hospitals in the future, two to three of them will be high-end facilities, while the rest will be community hospitals. With community hospitals as the mainstay and high-end hospitals as the brand flagship, we aim to highlight the cost-effectiveness of our brand,” Xie Fangmin revealed, sharing his vision for the future of the medical group.
