Q2 2017 Overseas Healthcare Funding Roundup: 80 Deals Totaling $2.58B, with 12 Exceeding $50M

The second quarter of 2017 was the quarter with the highest number of financing and investment transactions in four consecutive years, a figure verified by StartUp Health and MobiHealthNews.


This quarter (as of June 30), VCBeat (WeChat: vcbeat) tracked 80 transactions totaling $2.58 billion, based on information from the aforementioned two websites, and ranked and briefly introduced these companies that completed financing in descending order of amount.


1、Outcome Health


Funding Amount: $500 million


Outcome Health specializes in producing waiting-room screens and tablets for patient education and pharmaceutical marketing. The company’s first round of financing raised $500 million, valuing the company at $5 billion. Investors include Goldman Sachs Investment Partners, CapitalG, Leerink Transformation Partners, and Pritzker Group Venture Capital, among others, along with undisclosed strategic investors such as healthcare system investors and other shareholders.


2、Peloton 


Financing Amount: $325 million


New York City-based technology company Peloton has achieved tremendous success by integrating stationary bikes with tablets to offer virtual cycling classes, raising $325 million in its latest funding round. This investment brings the company’s total capital raised to approximately $445 million, at a valuation of $1.25 billion. The round was led by Wellington Management, Fidelity Investments, Kleiner Perkins, and True Ventures, with additional participation from Comcast NBCUniversal, GGV Capital, Balyasny Asset Management, and QuestMark Partners.


3、Modernizing Medicine 


Financing Amount: $231 million


Modernizing Medicine is committed to providing mobile electronic health records for specialist physicians and has raised $231 million in funding from the global private equity firm Warburg Pincus. The company had completed multiple prior financing rounds, bringing its total capital raised to $318 million after this round.


4、Bright Health


Financing Amount: $160 million


Minnesota-based health insurer Bright Health, adhering to its philosophy of “smarter, more connected information,” raised $160 million in a new round of financing. Greenspring Associates led this round, with participation from new investors Greycroft Partners, Redpoint Ventures, and Cross Creek Advisors, as well as existing investors New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Bessemer Venture Partners, and Flare Capital Partners. Prior to this, Bright Health raised $80 million in April last year, bringing the company’s total funding to $240 million.

Financing Amount: $140 million


PatientPoint, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, which provides an education and engagement platform for patients and providers, raised $140 million in a new round of financing from Searchlight Capital Partners and Silver Point Capital. The company delivers relevant content through various channels, including digital waiting room screens and interactive touchscreens in examination rooms, and plans to use the newly raised funds to expand its already substantial digital footprint.


6、Clover Health


Financing Amount: $130 million


Clover Health, a patient-engaged insurance company, secured $130 million in Series D financing led by investor Greenoaks Capital Management. New investors Google Ventures, Palm Drive Capital, and Western Technology Investment, along with existing investors Sequoia Capital and First Round Capital, also participated in the round.


7、Blink Health


Financing Amount: $90 million


New York-based startup Blink Health has developed apps and online tools to help consumers find affordable medications, raising $90 million in a Series B round led by 8VC. Previously, the company raised $75 million in another financing round also led by 8VC, bringing its total funding to $165 million.


8、Sharecare


Financing Amount: $85 million


Sharecare, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, is a company focused on social welfare and patient engagement, known for its series of acquisitions. Following investment from Summit Partners, the company’s total assets reached $300 million. In May, Sharecare secured $85 million in private equity financing, which it will use to expand its workforce, invest in new strategies, and pursue sustained growth.


9、Outset Medical


Financing Amount: $76.5 million


Outset Medical, a company focused on innovative clinical kidney dialysis, raised $76.5 million in its Series C financing round led by T. Rowe Price Associates. In addition to new investor T. Rowe Price Associates, existing investors Fidelity Management & Research Company, Partner Fund Management LP, Warburg Pincus, Perceptive Advisors, and The Vertical Group also participated in this investment. This round of financing brings the company's total funding to $185.5 million.

Funding Amount: $70 million


New York-based ClassPass raised $700,000 in its Series C funding round led by Temasek. Existing investors Acequia Capital, CRV, General Catalyst, GV, M13, and Thrive also participated in the financing. ClassPass will use the proceeds to expand operations and develop new products.


11、Babylon


Funding Amount: $60 million


Babylon, a UK-based health chatbot company, raised $25 million in early 2016 and an additional $60 million in April. Although the company did not disclose its investors, reports indicate that this round included the Egyptian billionaire Sawiris family and NNS Holdings.、Vostok New Venturesand existing investor Kinnevik.


12、Omada Health


Financing Amount: USD 50 million


Led by commercial partner Cigna, San Francisco-based Omada Health raised $50 million in a new round of financing. Civilization Ventures and Sanofi Genzyme BioVentures also participated in this funding round. Omada’s previous financing round occurred in September 2015, raising $48 million, while its most recent round has brought the company’s total capital raised to $175.5 million.


13、Glooko


Financing Amount: $35 million


Diabetes data management company Glooko has raised $35 million in new funding. The company already has strategic investments from Samsung and Medtronic. In this latest round, Mayo Clinic and insulin pump manufacturer Insulet have also joined the investor roster. In addition to the aforementioned healthcare and technology stakeholders, Toronto-based Georgian Partners led the round, with existing investors Canaan Partners and Social Capital also participating.

Financing Amount: $33 million


VitalConnect, a manufacturer of remote monitoring sensors based in San Jose, California, raised $33 million in a Series C funding round led by MVM Life Science Partners and Baxter International. The company’s previous fundraising round took place in June 2016, and it plans to use the new capital to drive the commercialization of its remote monitoring platform and medical-grade sensor systems.

Trice Medical has eschewed traditional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in favor of developing a miniature needle-based camera for the inspection and classification of joint injuries. The company raised $19.3 million in its Series C financing round to further promote the device in the United States. Safeguard Scientifics, HealthQuest Capital, BioStar Ventures, and Smith & Nephew all participated in this funding round, bringing Trice’s total capital raised to $40.9 million.

DayTwo is an Israeli startup dedicated to providing patients with analytics based on their gut microbiota. The company raised $12 million from a group of investors, including Johnson & Johnson Innovation and the Mayo Clinic. Seventure Partners’ Health for Life Capital Fund and private investors, including co-founder Marius Nacht, also participated in the investment.

Polish appointment software company DocPlanner has raised $16.8 million (€15 million) in new funding from Enern Investments, Target Global, and One Peak Partners. Existing investors Enern and Target Global led this round, bringing the company’s total funding to $51 million (€46 million).

ChartSpan, a medical technology company based in Greenville, South Carolina, provides digital care coordination tools and raised $16 million in a financing round led by Cypress Growth Capital.
