Recently, Ping An Good Doctor officially launched its online live-streaming program for medical and health science popularization, titled "Good Doctor Is Here." The program premiered on the Ping An Good Doctor app at 19:00 on August 7. During the first month of broadcast, episodes aired from 19:00 to 20:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Starting from the second and third months, the schedule expanded to weekdays (Monday through Friday) from 19:00 to 20:30, making it China’s first daily online live-streaming program dedicated to medical and health science popularization.

As a leading mobile internet healthcare platform in China, Ping An Good Doctor aims to provide users with truly engaging and practical health education content through “Good Doctor Is Here.” After downloading the Ping An Good Doctor app, users can access the program’s dedicated page by simply tapping the “Good Doctor Is Here” entry on the app’s home screen.

It is reported that the program has garnered support from over a hundred top-tier experts across China. In its initial phase, it will focus on more than 400 common diseases and health issues affecting the human body, delivering medical and health science popularization services to users through daily live broadcasts by renowned physicians. This initiative aims to enhance the public’s understanding of general health knowledge, disease prevention, and emergency response capabilities. It is understood that the launch of this IP for live-streamed health education by distinguished doctors targets bottlenecks such as the public’s lack of basic medical and health knowledge and the inability of traditional science communication methods to effectively reach audiences. Its goal is to establish the leading consumer platform for vertical content in the healthcare and medical sector.

2017 National Health Survey Report Highlights "Blind Spots" in Public Health Education

According to the "2017 National Health Survey Report" previously released by the Big Data Research Institute of Ping An Good Doctor, among more than 800,000 population samples, only 35.16% of users had a 60% level of understanding of the structure of major human organs, while 17.23% had no understanding at all.

In terms of accessing medical knowledge, the largest group of users (38.21%) obtains general health information online, followed by those who consult doctors (21.74%), and those who learn from newspapers and books (15.40%). This suggests that the general public has a significantly inadequate understanding of their own health status; a large number of patients do not seek immediate hospital care or professional medical consultation when ill, but instead choose to look up information online or simply “tough it out.”

As the internet has become the primary channel for accessing disease-related information, another set of data raises significant concerns. Regarding online medical and health knowledge, 83.35% of users question the source of the information, fearing it lacks authority; 13.07% of users report that online medical popularization articles are too technical and lengthy to understand; and 44.06% of users express a preference for obtaining health information through medical science lectures.

Content Strategy Under Ping An Good Doctor's Grand Platform Strategy

Previously, Ping An Good Doctor announced the completion of its “one-stop healthcare service platform,” establishing a closed-loop ecosystem encompassing healthcare content access, diversified medical services, and pharmaceutical e-commerce, while also keeping the platform fully open to the entire healthcare industry. As of May 2017, Ping An Good Doctor’s registered user base had surpassed 150 million. With the increasing frequency of use of its various services, user engagement and stickiness are expected to strengthen continuously, ultimately making it the habitual choice for users’ healthcare needs.

Wu Zongxun, Chief Product Officer of Ping An Good Doctor, stated, “Online consultation has served as a major traffic gateway for Good Doctor, following three years of strategic resource allocation. With the enrichment and opening of health-focused live streaming programs such as ‘Good Doctor Is Here’ and health news headlines, Ping An Good Doctor is poised to create another industry-defining, blockbuster traffic product in the realm of medical and health content consumption. We will prioritize our team, material, and financial resources toward this initiative. In the first phase, we will focus on over 400 common diseases and health issues, inviting renowned physicians to provide systematic education. We aim to determine how to genuinely meet the public’s demand for popular science-based medical and health information, thereby enhancing their general health knowledge, disease prevention awareness, and emergency response capabilities. We believe that medical science popularization holds significant social value. However, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step; it requires active participation and exploration by all stakeholders, including platform operators, government regulatory authorities, physicians, and hospitals. By leveraging live streams hosted by renowned physicians, we seek to satisfy users’ need for secure, anytime-anywhere content consumption in the mobile era, curb the spread of pseudoscientific health remedies, and establish professionalism as the mainstream.”

It is reported that Ping An Good Doctor’s health science popularization live-streaming program, “Good Doctor Is Here,” will focus on the audience’s actual medical needs. Adopting a daily broadcast schedule at fixed times, the program will address different diseases and health issues, inviting one renowned medical expert per episode to disseminate medical knowledge to the public that is highly practical, scientific, authoritative, and engaging.

Live Streaming Reshapes Physician Branding and Value

“In our live streaming programs, we have gathered hundreds of renowned medical experts and healthcare leaders from across China. These top-tier medical guests will break away from the traditional, didactic image, instead assuming the role of Sherlock Holmes to guide the public in meticulously unraveling complex health issues, identifying life-threatening conditions, and decoding the secrets of wellness,” Liu Ling, head of health live streaming at Ping An Good Doctor, told reporters. Content is merely one entry point; by launching live streams featuring renowned physicians, Ping An Good Doctor aims to reshape the personal brands and social value of Chinese medical experts, transforming “celebrity doctors” into “doctors for the people.” By leveraging live streaming technology across various scenarios, the platform enhances efficiency and serves a broader population. According to Dr. Han Baosan, a renowned breast surgery expert in China and Director of the Breast Surgery Department at Shanghai Xinhua Hospital, his previous health live streams attracted over 100,000 viewers per episode, with more than 4,000 participants engaging through questions and interactions. Some patients even traveled from places like Xiamen to consult him after watching his broadcasts, profoundly demonstrating the immense appeal of mobile healthcare.

“Medical content consumption is just one entry point. Industry insiders pointed out that Ping An Good Doctor’s move aims to start from user needs to build and refine a complete closed-loop mobile healthcare ecosystem, encompassing content consumption, medical services, artificial intelligence, pharmaceutical transactions, and insurance coverage.”
