What Will Fresenius’ Entry into Yunnan’s Hemodialysis Market Bring?

1. Further meet the needs of patients in Yunnan Province for accessing medical care closer to home

Yunnan Province features complex topography, an uneven population distribution, and a relatively insufficient overall supply of medical resources. In the realm of kidney disease treatment, although most tertiary hospitals and some secondary hospitals have established independent departments of nephrology, and more than 70 hospitals across the province provide blood purification services, these capacities remain inadequate to meet the growing diagnostic and therapeutic demands of patients with chronic kidney disease.

To this end, the Yunnan Provincial Government has been committed in recent years to supporting social forces in establishing medical institutions, promoting the development of urban community healthcare service facilities, fostering complementary growth between public and non-public medical institutions, introducing more high-quality medical resources, and creating a beneficial pattern of diversified development.

By introducing its hemodialysis services into Yunnan Province, Fresenius Medical Care aims to meet patients’ need for accessible, local medical care. In alignment with Yunnan’s overall development plan for the big health industry, the company is bringing its advanced operational models and management expertise from its global chain of hemodialysis centers to the province. This initiative seeks to fulfill the demand of kidney disease patients in Yunnan for high-quality medical services within their communities, thereby further improving the accessibility of hemodialysis for patients with renal failure in the province.

2. Meeting local healthcare needs while providing value-added services

Harry de Wit, CEO of Fresenius Medical Care Asia-Pacific, stated that Yunnan is not only one of the world’s premier tourist destinations but also a strategic hub connecting Southwest China within the Belt and Road Initiative.

Fresenius Medical Care’s dialysis services not only ensure access for local patients but also enable out-of-town patients to receive standardized, high-quality dialysis treatment and benefit from close coordination with dedicated medical teams while traveling for business or leisure. This allows them to fully enjoy the charm of Yunnan Province—a value-added service offered by Fresenius to dialysis patients.

Fresenius’ official press release stated: “Fresenius Medical Care will work with all parties to advance the later-stage implementation of this project, introducing Fresenius Medical Care’s globally leading dialysis services, advanced operational management systems, and training frameworks to Yunnan Province, thereby continuously meeting the needs of kidney disease patients in Yunnan for access to high-quality medical services within their local communities.”

3. Plan chronic disease management to provide high-quality medical services for patients

In April this year, an affiliate of Fresenius Medical Care successfully completed the equity acquisition of Kunming Wuhua Healthcare Hospital, becoming its controlling shareholder and taking the first step in its investment layout in Yunnan.

Regarding the collaboration and acquisition of Wuhua Health Care Hospital, Chen Yugang, President of Fresenius Medical Care China, stated, “As the first hospital invested in by Fresenius Medical Care in China, Wuhua Health Care Hospital will serve as a key platform for expanding our hemodialysis services. According to our plans, the hospital will establish a large-scale chronic disease management department to better support Fresenius Medical Care’s Renal Plus strategy. Following its renovation and upgrade, Wuhua Health Care Hospital will provide higher-quality medical services to patients in the Kunming area. Furthermore, it will act as a pilot project for Fresenius Medical Care in Yunnan Province, providing valuable experience for our future investments and development in the region.”

It is expected that over the next 3–5 years, Fresenius Medical Care will continue to invest in establishing multiple independent hemodialysis centers and specialized nephrology hospitals within Yunnan Province.
