“Target Clinic, powered by Kaiser”

This initiative builds upon the existing partnership between two major brands. As early as 2014, Target Corporation entered into a collaboration with Kaiser Permanente, aiming to provide convenient, high-quality health solutions to consumers at Target retail stores.

Specifically, Kaiser Permanente will staff the new clinics with licensed vocational nurses and licensed practical nurses, while providing physicians through telemedicine consultations. Target Clinic will offer guests a wide range of services, including: pediatric care; women’s health services; monitoring and treatment of chronic conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension; basic dermatology services; and treatment for minor ailments, including sore throat, sinus pain, earaches, asthma, colds, and flu, as well as vaccinations.

Kaiser’s integrated care service system is designed to provide customers with prioritized preventive healthcare, starting from basic medical services. To create a distinctive visitor experience, clinics are located within Target retail stores. This means that residents in Southern California can receive high-quality healthcare in a convenient, trusted, and familiar environment.

“From annual flu shots to pediatric care for sore throats, customers at our four pilot stores have told us they want access to high-quality healthcare services provided by Kaiser while Target is open.”

Currently, four clinics have been established and are located in the following areas: San Diego (Mission Valley), Vista, Fontana, and West Fullerton.

In addition, four more Target clinics will open this November, located in San Diego (Chula Vista, Santee), Orange County (North Irvine), and Riverside (Hemet). The remaining clinics among the 31 announced will be fully launched within Target stores across Southern California over the next three years.

Steve Lafferty, Senior Director of Health at Target, stated: “Expanding the number of Target Clinic locations enables these products to reach more guests in Southern California and provides Kaiser Permanente members with additional reasons to choose Target, where they can access healthcare services while enjoying a simple, convenient, and inspiring shopping experience.”

Julie Miller-Phipps, President of The Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals, stated, “This is a successful collaboration focused on the quality and convenience of healthcare services. We are proud to expand our existing efforts to provide more Target customers in Southern California with affordable, high-quality healthcare.”

CVS Health, which operates both retail pharmacies and clinics, has begun providing routine prescription services through its “retail clinic” brand, MinuteClinic, to support Kaiser Permanente’s existing four Target-based clinics. After receiving care at these Target clinics, eligible Kaiser members will be able to fill their prescribed medications at the CVS Pharmacy locations within the same Target stores.

Sharon Vitti, Senior Vice President and Executive Director of MinuteClinic, said, “CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic are delighted to play a role in this unique healthcare partnership. Both CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic have strong track records of delivering top-tier care to patients, and we look forward to meeting the pharmaceutical needs of Southern California residents through our presence in Target stores.”

Currently, Target Clinic accepts cash and credit cards and participates in a wide range of health insurance plans to facilitate customer access to its services.

Is the Retail + Healthcare Boom Here?

Globally, the sharing economy wave led by UBER is gaining momentum in many sectors, including primary care services. In the United States, Target is not the only retail giant entering the healthcare industry.

Taking Walmart as an example, as early as 2015, under the influence of the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance marketplace policies, primary healthcare services became widespread among millions of U.S. residents. Seizing this opportunity, Walmart opened several Primary Care Clinics within its larger retail stores.

Currently, Walmart operates clinics in more than 100 retail stores and has entered into a partnership with QuadMed. The company is actively pursuing brand promotion efforts, aiming to transform these newly established corporate-owned clinics into “one-stop shops” for primary healthcare services. These clinics are open 12 hours a day on weekdays and 8 hours a day on weekends, providing new and convenient care options for individuals newly enrolled in health insurance plans.

Furthermore, in 2015, the U.S. company Whole Foods also entered the healthcare industry by establishing Whole Foods Health Clinics in the United States, providing consumers and corporate employees with services such as disease consultation and chronic disease management programs.

Retail clinics are regarded as a new approach to delivering more affordable care in a timely manner, significantly reducing the time patients spend waiting for physicians in crowded waiting rooms during traditional visits, thereby providing quick and convenient services.

Whether it is retail pharmacies establishing clinics or traditional retailers rolling out clinic services, the trend of the retail sector entering the healthcare industry holds valuable implications for China, both in strengthening primary care and advancing the implementation of tiered diagnosis and treatment policies. Will retail healthcare pose a disruptive challenge to traditional medical chains? As American retailers increasingly venture into primary healthcare services, is the healthcare industry poised for another wave of transformation? These are the areas and emerging trends that VCBeat will continue to monitor closely.
